Charlie Scheinfeld Blasts 53.60 100 Breast as New Trier Wins IHSA Boy’s State

New Trier High School took home their 24th IHSA Boy’s State Championship title with a 10.5-point victory over defending champion Lyons Township.

The first session of the weekend was kicked off with the New Trier medley relay team of Patrick Gridley, Charlie Scheinfeld, Ryan Gridley and Pearce Bailey (1:29.53) breaking the pool and state record that was previously held by their runner-up competitors Lyons Township. In finals the New Trier team came up short of the record, but won in 1:30.13. The bronze medal went to the St. Charles North team of Srboljub Filipovic, William Myhre, Nathaniel Baxter and Brad Whitehurst.

The 200 free was won by Colton Paulson of Notre Dame, with a new pool record of 1:35.65. He was followed by Michael Balcerak of St. Viator with a time of 1:37.09 and Jacob Furlong of St. Ignatius in 1:38.52.

The 200 Individual Medley was a close race as Scheinfeld won the event in 1:49.42 followed by William Myhre with a 1:50.16. Myhre was ahead at the halfway mark in 52.76, but could not withstand a 29.76 breaststroke split from Scheinfeld. Jared Simpson of Waubonsie was also in the mix with a quick 27.63 backstroke split and a final time of 1:50.44.

The 50 free was won by Topher Stensby of Stevenson with a time of 20.18. Cole Grosshans of Hinsdale Central won a close battle for second with a time of 20.81 just ahead of Ezra Mizgala of St. Ignatius who raced to a 20.94.

Balcerak came back for an individual event win in the 100 butterfly, tying Lyons Township’s Henry Claesson in 48.60 while Horace Qiao (49.24) of Naperville took third.

Stensby doubled up his wins by claiming the 100 Freestyle title with a time of 44.57. He was followed by Ryan Gridley of New Trier with a time of 45.12 and Luke Maurer of Loyola in 45.63.

Paulson did likewise in the longer freestyle events by winning the 500 in 4:22.53. Furlong improved on his third-place finish in the 200 by placing second in this event (4:24.67). Liam Hutchinson of Fenwich rounded out the podium with his swim of 4:26.56.

Another close battle went down in the 200 Freestyle Relay as Hinsdale Central’s team of Billy Leader, Cole Grosshans, Donovan Lahmann and Brandon Glowniak won the event in 1:23.57. Lyons followed with a close second (1:23.85) with the team on Michael Walsh, Frank McCarter, Jeffery Vitek and Claesson. Stevenson’s team of Joseph Song, Topher Stensby, Nich Comini and Daniel Ng finished third in 1:24.03.

Lyons Township won their first event of the day from the efforts of Spencer Walker in the 100 Bacstroke. His winning time of 48.11 dominated the competition. Patrick Gridley of New Trier was second with a time of 49.08 and Caleb Carlson of Bryon took third in 49.15.

Scheinfeld utilized his strong breaststroke one final time to win the individual event in 53.72. His prelims swim of 53.60 broke the IHSA record (53.80) as well as the pool record (54.74). He was followed by William Myhre of St. Charles North (54.45) and Billy Leader of Hinsdale Central (55.52).

The meet came down to the final event – the 400 Freestyle Relay. New Trier’s Ean Vandergraaf, Ryan Gridley, Patrick Gridley and Scheinfeld combined for a 3:01.9 and the win. Second went to the Lyons Township team of Henry Claesson, Frank McCarter, Jeffery Vitek and Spencer Walker with a time of 3:03.05. Third went to Marmion with the team of William Kamps, Sam Wehrli, Molan Ferfus and Gary Rockwood in 3:05.80.

Lyons – 150.5
Hinsdale Central – 116.5 points

One Correction to your article.
Michael Balcerak and Henry Claesson TIED for the State 100 Butterfly Championship at 48.60. The 48.48 was Balceraks time from prelims. on Friday.

New Trier’s MR went 1:29.53 on Friday night. THAT is the new state and pool record.
