Carbon Girls, Grand County Boys Win Team Titles at Utah 3A State Championships

The 2019 Utah 3A State Championships took place on February 7 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Millard’s Drew Roper was named the Girls’ Swimmer of the Meet, while Emery’s Keldan Guymon earned the accolade on the boys’ side.

The Carbon High School girls won their first-ever State championship, edging out defending champion Rowland Hall by one point. Grand County was crowned boys’ team champion, eight points ahead of Emery.

The meet began as Judge Memorial’s Hailey Warden (31.16), Grace Sherman (34.32), Abby Runnels (28.91) and Hailey Grandy (26.01)won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 2:00.40.

Beaver’s Rachel McMaster dominated the 200 free, winning the event by seven seconds in 2:02.45. She then found herself on top of the podium for the second time of the day in the 100 free, an event she dropped over a second from her prelims time in to win in 55.69.

Roper splashed-and-dashed her way to a win in the 50 free as the only swimmer under the 25-second barrier, doing so in 24.63. She also was the sole athlete to sneak under one minute in the 100 back; she posted a final time of 58.44.

Grantsville’s Hadlee Begay flew to first in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall in 59.08 as the only swimmer in the field under the one-minute mark. Soon after, she won the 500 free in 5:18.11 – 15 seconds ahead of the competition.

Rowland Hall’s Grace Smith cruised to first in the 200 IM, posting a nine-second victory in 2:12.65. She also earned gold in the 100 breast, shaving off nearly three seconds from prelims in 1:09.51.

Smith (25.58) then combined with teammates Ella Vitek (26.36), Alison Puri (26.87) and Isabelle Louis (27.14) to take gold in the 4×50 free relay in 1:45.95. The same quartet conclude the meet as champions in the 4×100 free relay (3:53.26) as well.

Telos Academy’s Kyle McCarty (27.94), Conner Simon (31.69), Luca Quinones (25.72) and Ryan Gamble (21.98) began the boys’ meet as victors in the 4×50 medley relay, combing to win in 1:47.33.

Gamble then went on to win the 50 free in a speedy 22.46, about three-tenths ahead of runner-up Corbin Arbon (22.79) of Grand County. He swept both sprint events as he also was victorious in the 100 free as the only swimmer under 50 seconds in 49.12.

Grand County’s Braxten Pierce posted a quick 1:47.48 in the 200 free; he won by five seconds and was the only swimmer to break 1:50. Not too long after that, he found himself on top of the podium again after taking gold in the 100 fly in 54.30.

The 200 IM title belonged to Guymon, who led from start to finish; the senior won by seven seconds in 2:03.35. He also got his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast in 59.70.

Guymon (21.41) anchored the winning 4×50 free relay along with teammates Deegan Minchey (24.14), Parker Stilson (24.12) and Asher Beagley (23.87) in 1:33.54. The same relay squad concluded the meet with a 4×100 free relay win in 3:28.59.

American Leadership Academy’s Patrick Bless shaved off nearly 13 seconds from his entry time to secure the gold medal in the 500 free in a final time of 5:08.88. Zane Thomas of Grantsville led the charge in the 100 back, stopping the clock in 57.65 for the win.
