NEW COMMIT: The Ohio State University has recently picked up a new in-state verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from Pepper Pike, Ohio native Mairin O’Brien.

She will join Paige Hall and Gwen Woodbury with the Buckeyes as a member of the class of 2025.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, O’Brien does her club swimming with Cleveland Swim Institute and most recently placed 13th in the 50 free and 18th in the 100 free at Juniors East last month. This past summer, she finaled in the 50m free at Cleveland Sectionals before going on to take fifth in that event at Geneva Futures.

A current junior at Hathaway Brown High School, O’Brien is already a four-time Ohio State Championship finalist. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was the 50 free runner-up and placed seventh in the 100 free during her sophomore season while finishing third and fourth, respectively, in those events as a freshman.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at THE Ohio State University!!  I want to thank all of my friends, family and coaches who have surrounded me with endless support throughout this process.  I chose Ohio State for the awesome student services, unmatched facilities, the team, culture and great coaching staff.   It is a great privilege to be able to represent this top tier program and University.  I cannot wait to join the Buckeye Family!   Go Bucks!!!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.24
  • 100 free – 50.53
  • 200 free – 1:51.27
  • 100 back – 56.64

O’Brien will add her talents to a long legacy of Buckeye sprint talent and will join a training group following the graduation of Freya Rayner. Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for Ohio State at the start of the 2021-22 season, she would’ve placed in the C-final of the 100 free and is just shy of scoring range in the 50 free at the Big Ten Championships.
