Blake Pieroni Hits 48.7 100 Free at TYR Pro Swim Series Indianapolis; Mack Backs Up Prelims Swim With 54.0

Blake Pieroni took care of business on Thursday night of the TYR Pro Swim Series in the 100 freestyle with a 48.76 in taking the win to improve on his season best from this morning that was a 48.78. Pieroni currently is the third fastest American this season ahead of Trials as he won tonight in his home state ahead of Nathan Adrian (48.91) and Ryan Held (49.21).

Those three are the top three in the US at the moment as Held leads the national rankings ahead of Adrian and Pieroni in what will be a can’t miss race come Olympic Trials in Omaha.

Pieroni was out in 23.5 and came back in a 25.2 as he should also be dangerous in the 200 freestyle tomorrow. Alfonso Mestre, who led at the 50, was seventh at 49.50. Michael Chadwick, who was eighth at the 50, was fourth at 49.22. He finished ahead of Jorge Iga (49.23) and Zach Apple (49.32).

In the women’s 100 freestyle, Linnea Mack backed up her swim from this morning with a 54.00 to win the event ahead of NCAA runner-up Kate Douglass (54.30) and Virginia postgrad Catie DeLoof (54.36). From this morning, Mack put herself fourth in the national rankings with her swim of 53.7, as she has put herself in contention to make the 4×100 free relay team for Tokyo. Douglass and DeLoof also had solid swims, sitting eighth and ninth respectively in the national rankings.

Allison Schmitt (54.60) finished in fourth as she made the 4×100 free relay team at the last two Olympics. Beata Nelson (54.74) and Erika Brown (54.85), who are in their first year of postgrad swimming after stellar short course yards careers, finished fifth and sixth respectively in the women’s final.
