Astrid Dirkzwager, Megan Keil Double Winners at Kansas 6A Championships

Kansas high school girls state championship finals kicked off this morning with the 6A meet. Two swimmers walked away double winners at the end of the session.

In the first event of the day, Lawrence’s Maddie DeanMarian FrickEmily Guo, and Megan Drumm out touched Wichita East’s Katerina SavvidesAiden ChanJanis Hwang, and Madison Allen 1:50.31 to 1:50.54 for the 200 medley relay title. L-Free State was third in 1:52.02 with the team of Janet StefanovAvan CormaneyKasey Dunn, and  Piper Rogers.

That wasn’t the only second place relay finish for Wichita East. Astrid DirkzwagerJulia Whitfield, Chan, and Hannah Balch combined for a 1:41.14 in the 200 freestyle relay. S M-East dominated that relay as Hannah McPhailEmma LinscottTrinity Legill, and Crissie Blomquist stopped the clock in 1:38.01. L-Free State’s Gracie CaldwellCharlotte Crandall, Rogers, and Claire Campbell were third (1:41.83).

Wichita East freshman Dirkzwager won a tight 200 freestyle, getting to the wall in 1:50.40. S M-East’s Blomquist was just behind in 1:50.88. Campbell of L-Free State finished third (1:51.77). Dirzwager later topped the 100 backstroke by a solid margin in 55.33. Rachel Lyle of Blue Valley (57.67) took home silver and bronze went to Savvides (58.07).

Blomquist rose to the top of the podium in the 500 freestyle as the only swimmer under five minutes with her 4:56.87. Picking up silver was Maci McCullough of Wichita-Wast (5:03.78). Lawrence’s Morgan Jones (5:06.27) placed third.

Campbell also placed third in the 100 freestyle (51.54). Derby junior Megan Keil (51.00) and S M-North’s Joely Merriman (51.30) were first and second. Keil made is a sprint double, topping the 50 in 22.91. Merriman was second again with a 23.67. Wichita East’s Allen (24.18) placed third.

Two swimmers were under a minute in the 100 fly: Hailey Brull (56.39) of S M-Northwest and Emma Linscott (56.94) of S M-East.

Olathe-North’s Anika Lam won the 200 IM in 2:05.00. McCullough (2:08.72) and Savvides (2:09.42) were second and third.

Blue Valley senior teammates Morgan Hoffman (406.00) and Abby Loudenback (401.15) were first and second in one meter diving.

Wichita-East finally got their relay victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Allen, Whitfield, Savvides, and Dirkzwanger posted a 3:32.11. S M-East’s Blomquist, Linscott, McPhail, and Izzy Smith (3:33.26) were not far behind. L-Free State’s Krug, Dunn, Cormaney, and Campbell (3:37.80) earned third.
