Ariel Spektor Powers Bolles Boys to Florida 1A State Crown

The Bolles boys followed their girls team to the top of the podium at the 2017 Florida 1A High school state championships. The Sharks scored 350 points. The battle for second place between Pine Crest and Saint Andrew’s came down to the final relay. Saint Andrew’s secured runner up honors with 202 points while Trinity Prep ended the meet in third with 193 points.

The Bolles boys started the meet just like their girls’ team- with a narrow relay victory. Jake Adcockwho is verbally committed to Florida StatePaul DeGradoAriel Spektor, and Ansen Meyer touched in 1:31.58. Saint Andrew’s was second in 1:31.86 with Joshua BalbiIzaak BastianJesse Marsh, and Tiago Pereira. Finishing third was Elvis KotikovskiJacob SilbermanNicholas Vale, and Nico Ferrara for Pine Crest in 1:33.15.

Future Louisville Cardinal Hayden Curley won the 200 and 500 free. He took the 200 in 1:37.81. Also under 1:40 were St. Edwards’ Coleman Kramer (1:39.36) and University School’s Daniel Jacobs (1:39.37). In the 500 Curley touched in 4:21.92. Jacobs and Kramer swapped spots finishing second in 4:28.38 and third in 4:30.60.

Spektor, who verbally committed to USC in May, topped the 200 IM in 1:47.25. University School senior Patrick Groters was also under 1:50 in 1:49.02. Spektor’s teammate Degrado (1:51.42) picked up a bronze. Spektor also won the 100 fly (48.20), just two tenths ahead of Cole Crane of Episcopal School. He’d just hopped out of the 50 free, which he won in 20.40. Saint Andrews’ Bastian grabbed another silver with his 20.56. Monteverde sophomore L. De Oliveira was third (20.85). Ferrara, a UVA commit, touched fourth (20.91).

Trinity Prep snagged first and second in the 100 free with Luke Uttley (45.35) and Jan Collazo Torres (45.54). Ferrara (45.60) was on their heels.

Luke UttleyMatthew DegtyarReese Gawronski, and Collazo Torres of Trinity Prep won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:23.64. Saint Andrew’s’ Bastin, Pereira, Sam Gibson, and Tomas Piza touched second (1:24.73). Wrapping up the top three was John PareAnsen MeyerZi Win Lim, and Ethan Thomas of Bolles with a 1:25.22.

Groters swam a 50.23 to take 100 back gold. Out-of-Door senior Martin Baffico (50.68) and King’s Academy’s eight grader Josh Zuchowski, a multiple event National Age Group record holder, (50.74) were second and third.

Bastain powered to a 54.54 100 breaststroke. The senior came up just shy of the 54.33 State record. Bolles’ DeGrado went a 54.90 to finish second. Ryaan Hatoum of Berkeley placed third (56.65).

The team of Uttley, Degtyar, Gawronski, and Collazo Torres won the 400 freestyle relay for Trinity Prep in 3:03.03. Placing second with a 3:04.10 was Spektor, Adcock, John Pate, and Noah Emerson, for Bolles. Rounding out the top three was Saint Andrew’s’ Gibson, Marsh, Balbi, and Piza (3:10.33).
