Ariarne Titmus Registers Aussie Champs Distance Triple With Title in 800 Freestyle

Is a distance freestyle medal triple within reach for Australian star Ariarne Titmus at the Olympic Games? If this week is any indication, the 20-year-old appears on course for such an accomplishment, as she collected titles at the Australian Championships – all in impressive times – in the 200-meter freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle. Victory over the longer distance arrived on Sunday morning, as Titmus covered the 800 free in 8:23.13.

Hampered by a shoulder injury earlier this year, Titmus did not exhibit any lingering effects over the past several days and is positioned to excel at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. She is no stranger to tackling difficult programs, a la her American rival Katie Ledecky. At the 2019 World Championships, Titmus won gold in the 400 freestyle and earned minor medals in the 200 free and 800 free.

On her way to victory in the 800 free, Titmus was out in 2:02.68 at the 200-meter mark and hit the midway point of the race in 4:10.12. With two more months of training before Trials, Titmus seems prepared to deliver several performances that will garner attention ahead of the summer festivities in Japan. Earlier in the meet, Titmus checked in at 1:55.43 for the 200 free and 4:01.34 in the 400 free.
