Anna Chris Nicholas, Emma Adkins, Jack Smithson Lead Teams to Mississippi Class 1 State Titles

At the Mississippi High School Class 1 Swimming State Championships tonight in Tupelo, two teams took home the winners and runner up trophies. The Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School boys (132) beat St. Joseph Catholic School (115) while the St. Joseph Catholic girls (125) edged out a victory over Saint Andrew’s Episcopal (121).

Boys

Saint Andrew’s set the tone from the start, winning the opening relay by over two seconds. Jack SmithsonJay WarnockWill Davis, and Jackson VanMeter touched in 1:47.34. St. Joseph also got a number of points on the board with the team of Kenny ThomasJack ClementsJacob Harkins, and John Dorroh touching second in 1:49.65.

Smithson swam away with the 100 fly title, touching in 51.56. Earning his second silver of the day was Thomas (53.10). Smithson later won the 100 back in 52.91 while Thomas was runner up again in 56.27. Smithson’s teammate VanMeter snagged first in the 100 free (52.85)

Dorroh won the 200 freestyle (1:49.21) and the 500 free (4:52.65).

Saint Patrick Catholic High School’s Christian McKee earned 200 IM gold (2:06.22)

Alexander Fuller of Saint Stanislaus won the 50 free in 23.31. His teammate Alden Macomber (1:05.89) won the 100 breaststroke.

Fuller teamed up with John PrikasyBoyd Housey, and Peyton Cabell to win the 200 freestyle relay for Saint Stanislaus in 1:35.13. Saint Andrews ended the meet with one more victory. VanMeter, Reeves Fisackerly, Davis, and Smithson touched in 3:25.81 for the 400 freestyle relay crown.

Girls

Saint Andrew’s and St. Joseph got the meet out to a tight start in the girls’ 200 medley relay. Emily HerringtonKatlyne CallahanLauren Balfour, and Mayrant Gonwa touched in 1:57.94 for Saint Andrew’s while St. Joseph’s Anna Chris NicholasAvery NicholasEmma Adkins, and Arilyn Thomas, were just behind in 1:58.26.

Anna Chris Nicolas went on to win the 200 free (2:05.23) and 100 back (1:02.74). Her teammate Adkins won the 50 (24.43) and 100 (54.39) freestyles.

Balfour clocked a 1:00.72 to win the 100 fly and a 1:12.85 for 100 breaststroke gold.

Vancleave’s Cait Candler topped the 200 IM (2:17.14). She was also second in the 100 free (55.08).

Saint Andrews went two for two in relays as Balfour, Callahan, Gonwa, and Mary Helen Manuel put together a 1:46.90 to win the 200 freestyle relay, just faster than St. Josephs’ At the end of the meet Avery Nicholas, Caleigh HankinsElizabth Weisenberger, and Thomas in 1:47.35. Weisenberger, Hankins, Anna Chris Nicolas, and Adkins sealed the state championship, dominating the 400 freestyle relay in 3:51.26.
