ACC Men’s Championships Day 2 Heats: Louisville Sprints 4 into 50 Free A Final

In an otherwise balanced morning session at Day 2 of the ACC Men’s Championships, Louisville stands to make a big splash with four A-finalists in the 50 free.

Abdelrahman Salmeh is the top seed with a 19.14. But three other Cardinals climbed into the A final: Mihalis Deliyannis, Michael Eastman and Tanner Cummings, in the sixth through eighth spots.

It gives Louisville a foothold in the event to vault form third after Day 1 toward the top. NC State has three A-finalists in the 500 free and Virginia has three in the 200 individual medley, but the Cardinals take precedence.

500 freestyle

Ross Dant of NC State defended his top seed entering the meet, throwing down a morning 4:12.54. The top three seeds are sophomores, with Jack Hoagland following in 4:13.04 and Virginia’s John Walker in 4:14.96. Hoagland is hoping to get Notre Dame off the deck after Wednesday’s 200 medley relay disqualification has them mired in last place.

In fourth is Florida State freshman Yordan Yanchev, who dropped 19 seconds from his best yards time to take fourth in 4:15.02. No surprise for the Bulgarian record holder in the 400-meter free.

200 individual medley

The 2019 champion is out to regain his title in a senior-laden final. Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis, who was the silver medalist last year, set the pace in prelims at 1:43.67. Second is Virginia’s Samuel Schilling, one of three Cavaliers in the final. NC State’s Erge Gezmis (seventh) and Louisville’s Evgenii Somov (third), who finished third and fourth respectively in the event last year, are also in the hunt. Big time drops for Virginia Tech, who pushed four swimmers into the B final.

50 freestyle

A 50 free final without an NC State swimmer seems odd, but the Wolfpack were locked out, with three in the B final, including Noah Henderson in ninth. Peter Varjasi of Florida State, who was third last year, is also in the B final. Last year’s runner up Sameh sets the pace, with a showdown against Virginia freshman Matt Brownstead on tap. Pitt’s Blaise Vera, off the sizzling fly split Wednesday, is third, and Virginia Tech has two in the final.
