2022 Featured Swim Camp: Air Force Academy

Swim Camp 22 AIR FORCE

The Air Force swim camp offers a thorough analysis of stroke techniques and includes video analysis of the world’s best swimmers along with video analysis of each individual campers strokes. The session offers challenging training programs and plenty of stroke analysis. This is best suited for experienced swimmers with a good year-round training base.

The Cadet Natatorium on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy, which recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. The renovation included new bulkheads, starting blocks, scoreboards, and lighting. The updated pool facilities offer video analysis, reaction time pads on the blocks, as well as an onsite art dry land training room. In addition to its high altitude location at 7,200 feet, this is a world-class facility matched by only a few in the country.

Camp will run 8:30am until 4:00pm MT except for Fridays which operate as a half-day from 8:30am-12:00pm MT. Friday’s session ends with a pentathlon competition starting at approximately 9:00am MT. The campers are free to leave after the meet ends.

For any of the camps, swimmers should bring: suits, caps, towels, goggles, pull gear, kickboards, and short fins. There is also a dry land component to camp, please pack the appropriate clothing.

Colleen Murphy, AF Women’s Head Coach

Colleen Murphy enters her fifthh season as the head coach of the Air Force women’s swimming team in 2021-22. Murphy just completed her ninth season at the Academy. After serving as an assistant coach her first four years, Murphy was the team’s associate head coach in 2016-17. Murphy replaced Keith “Casey” Converse, who retired after 29 years at the Academy.

In 2019-20, Murphy led the Falcons to 13 dual wins, the program’s most since 2016, as well as a .722 winning percentage, the best winning percentage since 2014. The Falcons also went a perfect 9-0 against schools in the Western Athletic Conference, including a 146-96 win over WAC Champion Northern Arizona. In total, AF set 19 new top-10 all-time Academy bests, while Senior Heidi Schellin captured the Mountain West Conference Senior Recognition Award. She was the fourth Falcon to win the award in the last six years.

Year two at the helm for Murphy saw the Falcons have two All-Conference finishers in Kylie Stronko and Emma Strom at the 2019 MW Championships. Stronko also re-broke both of her backstroke records at the championships. At the conclusion of the season, AF was named a CSCAA NCAA Division I Scholar All-American Team.

In her first season as head of the program, Murphy continued to take the team to new heights. Four individual school records were broken, while the team set a new school record for team points at the Mountain West Championships with 572. Six Falcons earned All-MW honors, while five qualified with NCAA ‘B’ times for the CSCAA National Invitational.

Rob Clayton, AF Men’s Head Coach

Head coach Rob Clayton enters his 24th season as the Academy’s head men’s swimming coach in 2021-22.

Clayton has led the Falcons to a 208-106-2 overall dual record in his 23 seasons. He owns five Conference Coach of the Year awards (MWC 2007, 2010 & WAC 2015, 2016, 2020) and has won three WAC Championships (2015, 2016, 2020).

At USAFA, Clayton has coached men to 39 individual conference championships and eight relay conference championships. He has had four conference Swimmers of the Year, as well as two conference Newcomers of the Year. He has also had four swimmers achieve All-American status in Chris Knaute in 2006 (400 IM & 500 free), Michael Barnosky in 2016 (3rd in the 100 breast) and Zach Nelson (100 breast) and Wen Zhang (200 free) in 2020.

10 of his swimmers have competed in the Olympic Trials, including in 2008 when eight former Falcons participated in the Trials. In addition to the team’s success in the pool, Clayton’s swimmers have earned more than 180 academic all-conference honors and 27 MWC Scholar-Athlete selections, while 20 ahtletes have been designated Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
