2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 4: Ohio State Closing In

The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships kicked off its final day at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.

Ohio State leads the team standings heading into the final day with Michigan within striking distance and Indiana and Northwestern putting together strong meets.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 Backstroke

Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson cruised to the top seed in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 1:50.55, a second off of her seed time, but still three seconds ahead of the field. It broke the Iowa pool record.

Penn State’s Madison Hart took the second seed in 1:53.42, followed by Northwestern’s Emma Lepisova (1:53.84), Minnesota’s Teryn Waddell (1:54.15), Michigan’s Chloe Hicks (1:54.47), Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (1:54.80), Iowa’s Emilia Sansome (1:54.86) and Northwestern’s Krystal Lara (1:55.01).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 100 Freestyle

Michigan took the top two seeds in the 100 freestyle, but Ohio State stacked the final with five swimmers as the event is nearly completely the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.

Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil took the top seed in the event in 48.02, breaking the Iowa pool record. She finished just ahead of teammate Daria Pyshnenko (48.38), who tied for the second seed with Ohio State’s Freya Rayner (48.38).

The Buckeyes also have the 4-6-7-8 spots with Amy Fulmer (48.44), Taylor Petrak (48.73), Georgia White (48.76) and Lucija Jurkovic Perisa (48.87).

Wisconsin’s Lillie Hosack took the fifth seed in 48.68, the only non Michigan or Ohio State swimmer in the finals.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 Breaststroke

Indiana doesn’t have Lilly King anymore, but the Hoosiers are still a force in the breaststroke.

Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski (2:08.13) and Emily Weiss (2:08.24) took the top two seeds in the 200 breaststroke.

It was also a big event for Northwestern as the Wildcats put three in the final. Hanna Brunzell took the third seed (2:08.76), while Calypso Sheridan was fourth (2:08.93) and Sophie Angus took the sixth seed (2:10.22).

Ohio State’s Hanna Gresser took the fifth seed (2:10.16), while Minnesota’s Lindsey Kozelsky was seventh (2:10.24) and Michigan’s Miranda Tucker was eighth (2:10.39).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 Butterfly

Michigan’s Olivia Carter turned in a fast swim to close out the prelims session. The sophomore took the top seed in the 200 butterfly in 1:53.99, breaking the pool record.

The Wolverines have three of the top four seeds heading into finals as Vanessa Krause is third (1:55.44) and Victoria Kwan is fourth (1:55.46).

Northwestern’s Miriam Guevera took the second seed in 1:55.17.

Ohio State’s Kathrin Demler sits fifth heading into finals at 1:56.06, followed by Indiana’s Carla Gildersleeve (1:56.58), Nebraska’s Madison Coughlen (1:56.65) and Northwestern’s Ally Larson (1:56.92).
