2019 SEC Championships Day 3 Finals: Erika Brown, Mikel Schreuders Set SEC Marks

The second full evening of the 2019 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships featured heats of the 400 IM, 100 fly and 200 free on Day 3 at Georgia.

Tennessee’s Erika Brown and Missouri’s Mikel Schreuders each set SEC meet records on Thursday:

Women’s 400 IM

South Carolina senior Emma Barksdale picked up right where she left off in prelims, cruising to a two-second victory in the 400 IM to open Thursday’s finals season.

Barksdale won the race in 4:01.52, an NCAA “A” cut.

Florida freshman Vanessa Pearl took second in 4:03.56 in another NCAA “A” cut.

Texas A&M’s Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo finished third in 4:05.55 as the rest of the finals earned NCAA “B” cuts.

Florida junior Kelly Fertel was fourth (4:06.21), followed by Auburn senior Bailey Nero (4:07.31), Tennessee freshman Sinclair Larson (4:07.41), Florida senior Hannah Burns (4:07.51) and Tennessee junior Tess Cieplucha (4:08.78).

Men’s 400 IM

Florida freshman Robert Fink took four seconds off of his prelim time to surge to the 400 IM title, finishing in 3:40.94, leading a 1-2-3 Gator finish.

Teammate and fellow freshman Kieran Smith took second in 3:41.50, followed by junior Grant Sanders (3:42.87).

Georgia senior James Guest finished fourth (3:43.61), followed by teammate Clayton Forde (3:43.90), Missouri’s Alex Walton (3:47.29), Georgia’s Andrew Abruzzo (3:47.43) and teammate Aidan Burns (3:49.49).

Women’s 100 Fly

Tennessee junior Erika Brown continued her stellar meet by breaking the SEC meet record in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 49.85.

It was an NCAA “A” cut one day after breaking the NCAA record in the 50 free.

Auburn senior Aly Tetzloff finished second, also reading an “A” cut of 50.94.

Missouri senior Annie Ochitwa took third (51.25) as the rest of the finalists reached “B” cuts. Georgia’s Veronica Burchill was fourth (51.70), followed by LSU’s Haylee Knight (51.71), Georgia’s Olivia Carter (52.02), Tennessee’s Maddie Banic (52.05) and Texas A&M’s Taylor Pike (52.87).

Men’s 100 Fly

Florida junior Maxime Rooney held off Auburn senior Liam McCloskey to win the 100 fly. Rooney finished in 45.06, while McCloskey clocked a 45.11. Both were NCAA “A” cuts.

Georgia’s Camden Murphy finished third in a “B” cut 45.26. The rest of the finalists reached “B” cuts.

Auburn’s Santiago Grassi was fourth (45.77), followed by Texas A&M’s Angel Martinez (45.79), Florida’s Kacper Stokowski (45.96), Missouri’s Danny Kovac (46.20) and Daniel Hein (46.25).

Georgia’s Courtney Harnish finished third (1:43.53), followed by Texas A&M’s Claire Rasmus (1:43.96), Arkansas junior Anna Hopkin (1:44.56), Florida’s Georgia Marris (1:45.35) and Kelsey Dambacher (1:45.46) and Texas A&M’s Katie Portz (1:46.34).

Men’s 200 Free

Missouri’s Mikel Schreuders broke his own SEC meet record to win the 200 free in 1:31.27, an NCAA “A” cut. His previous mark was 1:31.61.

Tennessee’s Joey Reilman took second in 1:32.54 as the rest of the finalists reached “B” cuts.

Florida’s Khader Baqlah was third (1:32.71), followed by Alabama’s Robert Howard (1:32.76), Missouri’s Jack Dahlgren (1:33.33), Texas A&M’s Mark Theall (1:34.02), Florida’s Trey Freeman (1:34.09) and South Carolina’s Fynn Minuth (1:34.69).
