2019 Men’s ACC Swimming Championships: NC State Takes Title; Caio Pumputis Breaks ACC Record

The North Carolina State Wolfpack put the finishing touches on a fifth straight title Saturday evening at the 2019 men’s ACC swimming championships in Greensboro, N.C. Following his remarkable 44.44 100 back from Friday, NC State junior Coleman Stewart won the 200 back for the team’s only individual title on the final night, and he was named co-most valuable swimmer, along with Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis.

Virginia, Florida State, Louisville and Georgia Tech also saw swimmers win individual titles on the meet’s final evening. Finally, in the meet’s final race, Louisville won the 400 free relay in an amazing finish ahead of Florida State and NC State.

NC State finished with 1396.5 points, while Louisville took second with 1135.5 points. Virginia, meanwhile, made it a tight battle for second before ending up third with 1108 points, the highest finish for the Cavalier men since their last team championship in 2013.

Virginia Tech finished fourth with 820.5 points, barely edging out Florida State (819). The rest of the team rankings included Notre Dame (687), Duke (624), Georgia Tech (550), Pitt (508), North Carolina (388.5), Miami (161) and Boston College (159).

1650 Free

Virginia’s Brendan Casey, already the winner of the 400 IM and runner-up in the 500 free at the ACC championships, earned a convincing win in the mile, pulling away from early leader Zach Yeadon and then comfortably holding off Louisville’s Marcelo Acosta. Casey touched in 14:37.60, almost three seconds ahead of Acosta (14:40.19). Casey now ranks fourth nationally in the event behind Bobby Finke, Chris Yeager and Ricardo Vargas. Acosta moved into sixth in the national rankings.

Swimming out of lane one in the final heat, NC State’s John McIntyre took third in 14:41.73, No. 7 in the country. Notre Dame’s Yeadon faded to fourth in 14:44.55, well off his season-best time of 14:39.60 that ranks fifth in the country this year. NC State’s Eric Knowles, the 500 free champion from Thursday evening, took fifth in 14:46.85.

Also finishing among the top eight were Virginia’s Sam Magnan (14:54.03), Virginia Tech’s Lane Stone (14:54.65) and NC State’s Daniel Erlenmeyer (14:59.51).

200 Back

NC State’s Coleman Stewart completed the backstroke sweep with a domiannt effort in the 200-yard distance. The Wolfpack junior pulled away from the field on the third 50 and touched in 1:39.10. Stewart, a B-finalist in the event at last year’s NCAA championships, now ranks third in the country behind Patrick Mulcare and Joey Reilman, and he could be poised for improvement at the NCAA championships later this month when he shaves the beard he has sported this week in Greensboro.

Louisville freshman Mitchell Whyte took second in 1:40.39, holding off Virginia’s Joe Clark (1:40.68). White’s Cardinals are seeking to hold off Clark’s Cavaliers for second in the team race behind NC State. Following that duo, Florida State’s Griffin Alaniz edged out Virginia Tech’s Sam Tornqvist for fourth, 1:41.29 to 1:41.39.

Virginia’s Georga Wozencraft tied NC State’s Noah Hensley for sixth, with both touching in 1:41.83, and Georgia Tech’s Rodrigo Correia took eighth in 1:42.00.

100 Free

Florida State’s Kanoa Kaleoaloha stormed ahead of the field on the final 25 yards to claim the ACC title in the 100 free by three hundredths over Pitt’s Blaise Vera. Kaleoaloha’s final time was 42.34, just ahead of Vera (42.37) and NC State’s Justin Ress (42.41). Another Florida State Seminole, Emir Muratovic, took fourth in 42.55.

Many of the swimmers in the heat swam much slower than their prelims times, as Vera swam a 42.04 in prelims and Ress a 42.25. Meanwhile, Florida State’s Will Pisani posted the top time of the night as he won the B-final in 42.21.

Rounding out a tight A-final were Duke’s Miles Williams (42.68), Virginia’s Ryan Baker (42.77) and the NC State duo of Nyls Korstanje (42.86) and Jacob Molacek (42.89).

200 Breast

Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis swam the 200 breast final out of lane seven, but he dominated the final from the get-go. Pumputis, who won the 200 IM and finished second in the 100 breast earlier in the meet, recorded a time of 1:51.46 to take down Brandon Fiala’s two-year-old ACC record of 1:52.39. Pumputis moved past Andrew Seliskar as the top-ranked swimmer in the country this season and moved to 15th all-time in the event.

Louisville’s Evgenii Somov, the 100 breast winner from Friday night, took second in 1:53.26, and Notre Dame freshman Joshua Bottleberge took third in 1:53.90, just ahead of Virginia’s Keefer Barnum (1:54.04).

Duke’s Judd Howard took fifth (1:54.80), ahead of Virginia teammates Matthew Otto (1:54.86) and Casey Storch (1:55.58) and NC State’s Daniel Graber (1:56.17).

200 Fly

Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero trailed Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov for much of the race, but Albiero closed in 26.07 to pass Ivanov and hold off NC State’s Andreas Vazaios for the conference title. Albiero finished in 1:40.70, breaking his own ACC meet record set last year. He improved to fourth in the nation this season and moved into the all-time top-25 in the event.

Vazaios took second in 1:41.03, and Ivanov took third in 1:41.28. All three now rank among the seven fastest swimmers in the country this year. Virginia’s Zach Fong was just behind in 1:41.39.

Louisville’s Zach Harting, the bronze medalist in the long course 200 fly at the Pan Pacific Championships, finished fifth in 1:42.10, followed by Virginia’s Ted Schubert (1:42.66) and NC State teammates James Bretcher (1:43.25) and Zach Brown (1:43.34).

400 Free Relay

Florida State, with four of the top 11 swimmers in the 100 free, looked to be in position to take first in the 400 free relay with the lead and 100 free champion Kanoa Kaleoaloha anchoring, but a pair of accomplished seniors, Louisville’s Zach Harting and NC State’s Justin Ress, both posted monster splits to set up perhaps the meet’s most remarkable finish.

In the end, Harting got his hand on the wall in 2:48.35, 16 hundredths ahead of Florida State (2:48.51). Nicolas Albiero (42.84), Andrej Barna (41.93) and Bartosz Piszczorowicz (42.08) swam the first three legs for the Cardinals, and Harting finished in 41.50 to take the win. FSU’s team consisted of Emir Muratovic, Jakub Ksiasek, Will Pisani and Kaleoaloha, who anchored in 41.64.

NC State finished just two tenths behind the Seminoles in 2:48.71 with Ress anchoring in 40.81, by far the top time in the heat.

Virginia Tech took fourth in 2:51.23, one hundredth ahead of Virginia (2:51.24). Rounding out the top eight were Pitt (2:52.79), Duke (2:52.97) and Georgia Tech (2:53.62).
