The first finals session of the 2019 FINA World Championships has concluded and brought a thundering start to the eight-day meet.

World, American, and Championship records were shattered in the semifinals of the men’s 100 breast and men’s 50 fly. Great Britain’s Adam Peaty completed his “Project 56” quest and became the first man to break the 57-second barrier in the 100 breast with a 56.88, while the USA’s Caeleb Dressel lowered the American and World Championship record in the men’s 50 fly to a 22.57. Dressel currently sits just .30 seconds off the World Record going into tomorrow’s finals.

Fans in Gwangju and abroad were stunned (and impressed) to see young Aussie Ariarne Titmus chase down veteran distance ace Katie Ledecky in the finals of the 400 free. Titmus touched out Ledecky 3:58.76 to 3:59.97.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom claimed the top seed in the women’s 100 fly semi-finals with a controlled 56.29, while Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu delivered a 2:07.17 in the women’s 200 IM semi-finals. Both women enter their respective finals with chances to win their fourth straight titles.

China’s Sun Yang collected his fourth straight title in the men’s 400 free, but it was not without drama. Sun touched first with a time of 3:42.44, followed by Australian Mack Horton (3:43.17) and Italian Gabrielle Detti (3:43.23). However, when the three stepped up to the podium, Horton refused to step up to the top for a picture with Sun and Detti.

Throughout the entirety of the finals session, Swimming World photographer Becca Wyant was on deck capturing the action and excitement, while Swimming World’s Craig Lord, John Lohn, Liz Byrnes and Andy Ross reported on the action.
