2019 Conference USA Championships Day 3: FIU Holds Lead

The third finals session of the 2019 Conference USA Championships featured six events including the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.

Florida International University strengthens their lead, boosting their team score to 646.5 points, followed by Rice University with 549.5 points, University of North Texas in third with 379 points, Marshall University with 307 points, Florida Atlantic University with 213 points, and Old Dominion University in sixth place with 189 points.

Women’s 400 IM

Freshman Holly Shepherd from Florida International University took the lead in the 400 IM, finishing off with an improvement in time, hitting 4:15.27. FIU freshman, Stephanie Hussey, came in second place with a 4:17.96, followed by senior from Old Dominion, Emilie Petit (4:18.99), Rice junior, Claire Therien (4:19.36), Rice sophomore, Hannah Sumbera in fifth with 4:20.85.

Marshall senior, Carolin Wanner came in sixth with a 4:23.00, followed by Marshall senior, Maddi Shaffer (4:24.31) and Rice senior, Hanna Huston came in eighth with a (4:24.57).

Women’s 100 Fly

Senior from University of North Texas, Emmabet Jensen, took first place in the 100 fly with a 53.80. FIU sophomore, Sara Gyertyanffy, came in second place with a 54.12, and Marshall junior, Hannah Robins, took third place with a 54.48.

In fourth, University of North Texas senior, Britt Thurstin, finished with a 54.74, followed by Rice sophomore Brittany Bui (54.88), Rice freshman, Becca Evans (55.34), FIU sophomore, Camil Wishaupt (55.50), and junior from Marshall, Jordyn O’Dell, took eighth place with a 56.57.

Women’s 200 Free

After her win in the 500 free, Rice University sophomore, Ellery Parish came back and dominated the 200 free with a strong 1:46.49. In second place tied University of North Texas sophomore, Leigh Faires McGee, and Marshall junior, Catherine Bendziewicz with 1:46.66.

In fourth place came Rice sophomore, Lindsay Mathys, with a 1:47.05, followed by Rice freshman, Marta Cana Minarro (1:48.08), FIU junior, Megan Bowen (1:49.43), Rice senior, Sydney Franzen (1:50.77), and FIU junior, Berta Triola took eighth place with a 1:52.42.

Women’s 100 Breast

Rice senior, Marie-Claire Schillinger, swooped in for the win in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.68, breaking her own meet record of 1:00.13. FIU freshman, Sara Gyertyfanffy, took second place with a 1:00.98 and FIU junior, Carita Luukkanen came in right behind her at 1:01.07.

In fourth place came FIU junior, Taylor Grabenhorst, with a 1:02.30, followed by  Rice freshman, Phillis Range (1:02.65), UNT senior, Meaghan Rousset (1:03.01), Rice sophomore, Nicole Limberg (1:03.40), and FAU junior Fatimah Westbrook took eighth place with a 1:03.60.

Women’s 100 Back

FIU senior, Naomi Ruele, came back the third night to gain another win in the 100 back with a 52.51. In second place came Rice senior, Rabea Tzenetos, with a 53.89, followed by UNT junior, Jowita Sienczyk with a 54.27.

In fourth place, Jordyn O’Dell, Marshall junior, swam in with a 54.62, followed by Rice junior, Kate Nezelek (55.14), Old Dominion junior, Jacklyn VandePoel (55.87), FIU freshman, Helga Fodor (55.96), and FAU sophomore, Abby Marshall, taking eighth place with a 56.31.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

The final event of the night was the 400 medley relay, swept up by Florida International University. The relay was led in backstroke by Ruele, splitting a 52.69, followed in the breaststroke by Luukkanen with a 1:00.73, Hussey with a 53.37, and anchored by Fodor, splitting a solid 49.70. Rice University took second place with a 3:37.91, and University of North Texas took third place with a 3:41.45.

Florida Atlantic University came in fourth place with a 3:48.52, followed by Marshall University with a 3:48.77, and Old Dominion University in sixth place with a 3:51.59.
