The final night of the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from the University of Iowa saw the Indiana Hoosiers win their third straight Big Ten title in men’s swimming and diving as they scored 1,705 points. Michigan finished in second while Ohio State was in third. Full team standings can be seen below.

The big highlights from the Hoosiers came from seniors Vini Lanza and Ian Finnerty as they put up the top times in Division I in their respective events. Lanza won the 200 fly with a 1:39.28 as he moved ahead of Cal’s Zheng Quah (1:39.29) for the top time in the country. Finnerty swam a 1:50.30 in the 200 breast as he moved ahead of Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis (1:51.46).

Indiana also won the 200 back with Gabriel Fantoni (1:39.53) and the 400 free relay (2:48.67).

Michigan won a title in the 1650 from Felix Aubock (14:29.58) and Minnesota won in the 100 free with Bowen Becker (41.71). Purdue’s Brandon Loschiavo also continued Purdue’s three-year winning streak in the platform diving as he won the title for the Boilermakers.

Another interesting fact is that nine of the thirteen pool event winners (individual) from 2018 repeated in 2019. The only exceptions were Michigan’s Miles Smachlo in the 100 fly, Bowen Becker in the 100 free, Gabriel Fantoni in the 200 back, and Zach Apple in the 200 free. Becker and Apple won the only two events that were won by a senior in 2018 when Indiana’s Blake Pieroni won those events.

  • Diver of the Championships: James Connor, Sr., Indiana

Michigan’s Felix Aubock was in a tight three-way race for about 1500 yards before turning on the gas over the final 150 as he came home in a 47.28 on the final 100 to win the 1650 final at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Aubock won with a 14:29.58, just missing his 2017 meet record of 14:29.25, but he did get under the pool record of 14:32.38 from the 2015 NCAAs when Matias Koski won it.

Michigan went 1-3 as sophomore Ricardo Vargas (14:31.76) finished in third. He was just out-touched by Indiana freshman Michael Brinegar (14:31.73) as he came home in a 23.38.

Aubock won his third straight 1650 Big Ten title as he is looking to close out the sweep as a senior in 2020. Aubock is the first three-time winner since fellow Wolverine Connor Jaeger won from 2012-2014. The Wolverines have won 24 of the last 27 1650 Big Ten titles.

Indiana freshman Mikey Calvillo (14:45.64) placed fourth for the Hoosiers as Indiana is building a strong distance group with the likes of Calvillo and Brinegar in their freshmen seasons. Combined with post grad Zane Grothe, Bloomington has become a hotbed for distance training.

Michigan’s Will Roberts (14:54.77), Penn State’s Michael Daly (15:03.81), Indiana’s Spencer Lehman (15:06.47) and Minnesota’s Cameron Kelley (15:07.86) also placed in the top eight.

200 Back

Indiana sophomore Gabriel Fantoni swept the backstroke races at the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships as he was the only one to break 1:40 in the final on Saturday night at the University of Iowa. Fantoni swam a 1:39.53 as he became the third straight Hoosier to win the 200 back at the Men’s Big Tens after Bob Glover won in 2017 and Mohamed Samy won in 2018.

Samy swam in the 200 back final tonight but only managed a fifth place finish at 1:41.93. Indiana had three total A-Finalists as Fantoni went 1-3 with sophomore Jacob Steele (1:41.52).

Wisconsin junior Cam Tysoe (1:41.29) finished in the runner-up for the Badgers as he was the highest finisher for the Badgers this meet.

Early leader Joe Young of Purdue was leading at the 100 with a 48.55 but could not hold on to that pace as he finished in sixth at 1:42.38.

Michigan’s Kai Williams (1:41.77), Iowa’s Kenneth Mende (1:42.53) and Purdue’s Tim Barth (1:44.07) also placed in the top eight.

100 Free

Minnesota senior Bowen Becker doubled up in the sprint freestyle events at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships as he won the 100 free on Saturday night at the University of Iowa. Becker swam a 41.71, just off his 41.53 he had this morning. Becker set the pool record in the heats with that swim and his swim tonight was good enough to win the title. He held off Indiana senior Zach Apple for the title as Apple was second at 41.97. Those two were the only ones under 42 in the event.

Becker broke Indiana’s three-year winning streak in this event at the Big Tens as he is the first Golden Gopher to win this event since 2011 when Michael Richards won.

Ohio State’s Andrew Loy (42.65) finished in third for the Buckeyes as they are solidly in third in the team race.

Indiana’s Bruno Blaskovic (42.69), Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev (42.74), Michigan’s Gus Borges (42.92), Iowa’s Jack Smith (42.96) and Penn State’s Gabriel Castano (43.29) also swam in the A-Final.

200 Breast

Indiana senior Ian Finnerty also doubled up in the breaststroke events this weekend at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships as he won the 200 breast on Saturday night at the University of Iowa. Finnerty swam a 1:50.30 to break his Big Ten meet record of 1:50.78 from last season as he also posted the nation’s leading time in the process.

Finnerty was well ahead of Minnesota freshman Max McHugh (1:52.40) for second as the McHugh brothers have now gotten second place in this event at the last two Big Ten Championships. Brother Conner was second to Finnerty in 2018.

Indiana has now won seven of the last ten Big Ten titles in the 200 breaststroke as in-state rival Purdue has won the other three, making the state of Indiana undefeated in this event throughout the entire decade.

Michigan’s Charlie Swanson (1:52.94) finished in third in the final.

Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis (1:53.57), Jason Mathews (1:53.70), Indiana’s Zane Backes (1:53.78), Michigan’s Jeremy Babinet (1:53.83) and Indiana’s Gary Kostbade (1:54.18) also placed in the top eight.

Lanza swam a 1:39.28 to take down the meet and pool record in the process.
