2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Vini Lanza Goes 1:41 200 IM as Indiana Leads

The first night of the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships featured finals in the 500, 200 IM, 50 free, 1m diving and 400 medley relay. All of the 2018 winners repeated in the pool tonight as Michigan’s Felix Aubock, Indiana’s Vini Lanza and Minnesota’s Bowen Becker each won their respective events on Thursday night.

Lanza broke the meet record in the 200 IM with a 1:41.05 as he also swam butterfly on Indiana’s winning 400 medley relay team. The Hoosiers just missed the meet record at the end of the night with a 3:01.63.

Indiana also won the 1m diving with senior James Connor on top for the Hoosiers. Indiana is winning the team standings after two days. Michigan is in second and Ohio State is third.

500 Free

Michigan junior Felix Aubock won his third straight Big Ten title in the 500 free as he swam a 4:09.37 on Thursday night at the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Iowa. Aubock led a Michigan 1-2-3 with sophomore Ricardo Vargas (4:11.72) and freshman Patrick Callan (4:12.53). Aubock is now leading Division I with his swim as Vargas is now sitting in second.

Michigan had five total bodies in the A-Final in the 500 with sophomore Will Roberts (4:19.35) and senior Mokhtar Al-Yamani (4:21.36) finishing in sixth and seventh. Al-Yamani was the early leader through 150 yards but faded badly.

Indiana’s freshman duo of Mikey Calvillo (4:17.22) and Michael Brinegar (4:18.79) finished in fourth and fifth as the Hoosiers tried to stop the bleeding with all of the Michigan points there.

Ohio State’s Nicholas Hogsed (4:22.62) finished in eighth. Michigan has now won 24 of the last 27 Big Ten titles in the 500. Aubock is also the first three time winner in this event since Michigan’s Connor Jaeger won from 2012-2014.

200 IM

Indiana senior Vini Lanza won the 200 IM on Thursday night at the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a 1:41.05. Lanza won his third straight Big Ten title in the event as he took down Kyle Whitaker’s meet record in the process. Whitaker’s 1:41.14 had stood since 2014.

The Hoosiers almost went 1-2 with senior Ian Finnerty fading to third as he was a 1:41.74. Finnerty split a 28.57 on the breaststroke leg as he ended up getting passed by Ohio State junior Andrew Loy (1:41.36) on the freestyle leg. Loy was the only one in the field to break 24 seconds on the final 50.

Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis (1:42.67) finished in fourth.

The Michigan Wolverines had three swimmers in the final as juniors Charlie Swanson (1:43.33), Thomas Cope (1:43.37) and Jacob Montague (1:44.06) placed fifth, sixth and seventh.

Purdue’s Erik Juliusson (1:46.82) also placed eighth in the final.

Lanza now sits second in Division I behind Cal’s Andrew Seliskar (1:40.55). Lanza is also the first three-time winner since Whitaker won in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

50 Free

Minnesota senior Bowen Becker successfully defended his 50 free Big Ten title on Thursday night at the University of Iowa. Becker swam a 19.11 as he won by 0.01 over Michigan sophomore Gus Borges (19.12). All three of the defending champions have won tonight so the meet is playing out almost exactly as it did in 2018. Becker was off his meet record he set last year in his home pool at 18.69.

Penn State’s Gabriel Castano (19.20) finished in third for Penn State’s highest finish of the meet thus far.

Indiana’s Zach Apple (19.23) and Bruno Blaskovic (19.28) finished fifth and sixth as the Hoosiers are now within one point of the lead with big points in diving still coming.

Ohio State’s Ben Sugar (19.44), Ruslan Gaziev (19.60) and Penn State’s Willie Roberson (19.75) also competed in the final.

Becker is now the first Minnesota Golden Gopher to win back-to-back Big Ten titles in this event since Michael Richards won in 2010 and 2011.

1m Diving

Indiana took care of business in the 1m diving final as the Hoosiers went 1-2 on Thursday night of the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Senior James Connor (467.60) won the title ahead of sophomore Andrew Capobianco (458.90) as the Hoosier tallied 81 points in the event.

Arch rival Purdue also picked up a lot of diving points as the Boilermakers had 90 points in the event. Sophomore Greg Duncan placed third for Purdue (420.65) while teammates Joey Cifelli (399.25) and Brandon Loschiavo (337.35) placed fifth and seventh.

Penn State’s Hector Garcia (419.40) was the highest finishing diver outside of the state of Indiana. Minnesota’s Nick Yang (387.65) and Iowa’s Anton Hoherz (320.65) also competed in the championship final.

The Hoosiers have now won six of the last seven 1m diving titles at the Big Ten Championships.

400 Medley Relay

Indiana dominated the 400 medley relay on Thursday night to close out the session at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The Hoosiers just missed the meet record they set last year as three of the four returned in 2019 to go a 3:01.63. Gabriel Fantoni (45.15), Ian Finnerty (50.51), Vini Lanza (44.83) and Zach Apple (41.14) now have the top time in Division I as we are less than four weeks away from NCAAs.

The Hoosiers finished well ahead of Michigan (3:04.90) and Minnesota (3:05.46).

The quickest splits outside of Indiana came from Purdue’s Joe Young (46.39), Wisconsin’s Jian Mao (51.55), Michigan’s Miles Smachlo (44.67) and Minnesota’s Bowen Becker (41.31).

Ohio State (3:06.20), Purdue (3:07.70), Wisconsin (3:08.08), Iowa (3:09.35) and Northwestern (3:09.98) also placed in the top eight.

Indiana has now won four straight 400 medley relay titles at Big Tens as Lanza has been on all four of those relays.
