2019 Big Ten Men’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Michigan, Indiana Stack Finals

After one session of the 2018 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Indiana and Michigan are tied.

The meet continues with Thursday’s prelims, the first session with individual events of the meet.

The Wolverines and Hoosiers will look to keep pace with each other heading into finals.

A look at how many swimmers each team put in the A, B and C finals:

Michigan: 9-2-4

Michigan asserted its dominance in distance events by taking five of the top eight seeds in the 500 free.

Junior Felix Aubock took the top seed in 4:15.13, nearly a second ahead of the field.

Teammate Kevin Callan, a freshman, took the second seeding 4:16.04. Michigan’s Ricardo Vargas took the fourth seed at 4:17.40 and Williams Roberts was fifth (4:18.08) and Mokhtar Al-Yamani was eighth (4:19.84).

Indiana’s Michael Calvillo took the third seed at 4:17.36 and James Brigenar was sixth (4:18.54). Ohio State’s Nicholas Hogsed took the seventh seed (4:19.34).

200 IM

Ohio State junior Andrew Loy held off a pair of Hoosiers to take the top seed in the 200 IM. Loy finished in 1:41.15.

Indiana’s Vini Lanza took the second seed in 1:42.78, followed by teammate Ian Finnerty (1:43.26).

Michigan took three more seeds in the finals as Charles Swanson took the fourth seed (1:43.52), Thomas Cope took the sixth seed (1:44.10) and Jacob Montague took seventh (1:44.29).

Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis took the fifth seed (1:43.91) and Purdue’s Erik Juliusson took the eighth seed (1:44.83).

Michigan’s Luiz Gustavo Borges held off the field to earn the top seed in the 50 free. The sophomore finished in 19.15.

Minnesota senior Bowen Becker took the seconds seed just a hundredth behind in 19.16.

Indiana’s Zach Apple took the third seeding 19.18, followed by Penn State’s Gabriel Castano (19.24), Indiana’s Bruno Blaskovic (19.32), Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev (19.34), Ohio State’s Benjamin Sugar (19.45) and William Robertson (19.52).
