The third night of finals at the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships will be a very quick night. Claire CurzanZoe Skirboll and Charlotte Hook made a dent in the 13-14 all-time rankings while Josh Matheny and Gretchen Walsh moved up the 15-16 lists.

Men’s 400 IM

Carson Foster made a huge impact on the 400 IM final tonight at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships with a massive time drop with a 3:40.86, breaking the meet record by almost three full seconds. The old meet record was a 3:43.64 by Kieran Smith from last year, and Foster dropped that down to a whole new level.

Foster moved up to fourth all-time in the 17-18 age group in the 400 IM, sitting only behind Andrew Seliskar, Chase Kalisz and Gunnar Bentz. Foster moved ahead of 2012 Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte on the all-time list. Foster’s time would also be second in the nation in Division I this season, and he is only a junior in high school.

Foster finished first ahead of his brother Jake Foster, who tied the old meet record with a 3:43.64. Foster also moved up to tied for 12th in the 17-18 all-time rankings with Curtis Ogren.

Those two were well in front of the rest of the field as Owen Conley finished in third at 3:46.25. Those three were the only ones under 3:50.

17-18 All-Time Rankings:

  1. Andrew Seliskar, 3:37.52 (2015)
  2. Chase Kalisz, 3:39.82 (2013)
  3. Gunnar Bentz, 3:40.57 (2014)
  4. Carson Foster, 3:40.86 (2018)

Women’s 100 Fly

Claire Curzan took everyone by surprise in the 100 fly final on Friday night at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships with a 51.92 from lane one. She stole the final by using a strong second 50 and touching with the second fastest time ever for a 14-year-old. Curzan moved up to second all-time in the 13-14 NAG rankings, sitting just behind Regan Smith’s 51.73 from the 2016 Winter Juniors. That time is also the meet record.

This was Curzan’s first time breaking 52 seconds as her best time was a 52.94 from a couple weeks ago. Curzan just out-touched Kate Douglass of Chelsea Piers (51.95) and Gabi Albiero (51.97) to win her first Junior National title.

Albiero moved up to seventh all-time in the 15-16 age group in the 100 fly with her swim.

It was a very tight field with Isabel Ivey (52.11) placing fourth and Gretchen Walsh (52.23) placing fifth, just a few tenths out of first.

13-14 All-Time Rankings:

  1. Regan Smith, 51.73 (2016)
  2. Claire Curzan, 51.92 (2018)

Men’s 100 Fly

In almost a replay of the preceding women’s 100 fly, Sterling Crane won the men’s version from lane one with a 47.22, just like Claire Curzan did in the previous heat. Crane finished just ahead of Jean-Pierre Khouzam (47.26) and Max Edwards (47.47).

It was anyone’s race coming down the last 25, much like the women’s race before it, too. The time is a new best for Crane, who moved up to tied for 76th all-time in the 100 fly for the 17-18 age group. He is tied with Magnus Holler and Micah Slaton.

The whole final was separated by less than a second with Boyd Poelke (47.59), Cason Wilburn (47.59), Noah Henderson (47.61), Preston Forst (47.90) and Kimani Gregory (48.03) competing in the tight final.

Women’s 200 Free

Cora Dupre won another event for the Mason Manta Rays this weekend, joining their dominant men’s team in the win column. Dupre led from start to finish and swam a 1:45.27 in the final on Friday night at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships, moving her up to 56th all-time in the 17-18 age group.

Dupre held off a strong late charge from 500 champ Mary Smutny (1:45.75), who was the only other swimmer under 1:46 in the final.

Tight races seem to be the theme of the night with Maxine Parker (1:46.21) and Kelly Pash tying for third place. Parker moved up to 55th all-time in the 15-16 age group.

14-year-old Natalie Mannion moved up to 18th all-time in the 13-14 age group with her fifth place effort of 1:46.96. This morning she passed Simone Manuel on the all-time list, tonight she passed Natalie Coughlin.
