2018 FINA World Cup Singapore: Sjostrom Snaps Hosszu’s 100 IM Streak On Night One

The first finals session of the 2018 FINA World Cup Singapore kicked off tonight, with world cup leader Vlad Morozov grabbing two wins and a World Cup record. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom also came away with two wins tonight, and in the process broke Katinka Hosszu’s 100 IM winning streak.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

Germany’s Reva Foos, the second seed out of this morning’s prelims, took the win in the opening event of the final World Cup stop, ending Femke Heemskerk’s World Cup streak in this event. Heemskerk was leading heading into the final 50, but faded badly on the last 50 before Foos stormed by to take the win. In second was Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas (4:08.10) and in third was Australian Madison Wilson (4:08.51). Heemskerk finished in fourth in 4:09.44.

Men’s 400 Freestyle

Australian Olympic gold medalist Mack Horton was the top finisher in the men’s 400 free, posting a 3:41.44 for the win. Horton has been up and down this short course season, but was able to put together a strong race that had him passing podium finishers Velimir Stjepanovic and Blake Pieroni down the final 50. Horton’s season best is a 3:39.52. Stkepanovic finished second in 3:41.52, while Pieroni was just behind in 3:41.94.

Women’s 100 IM

Sarah Sjostrom and Katinka Hosszu had a close battle in the 100 IM, with Sjostrom just edging out a win over Hosszu in the final 57.49 to 57.56. Hosszu, who is the world record holder in the event, couldn’t match her top seed from this morning (57.18) which would have been good for the win here. Sjostrom’s win breaks Hosszu’s streak in this event. The Hungarian has won a staggering twenty-seven finals in the 100 IM.

Men’s 100 IM

World Cup leader Vlad Morozov was just .05 off of his world record in tonight’s 100 IM final, dominating the race with a 50.31. Morozov tied his own world record less than a week ago in Tokyo. American Michael Andrew was second in 51.16, a season best and less than half a second away from Ryan Lochte’s American record in the event. He was just ahead of Wang Shun (51.62), Hiromasa Fujimori (51.63), and Kenneth To (51.97), who were all in the hunt for second.

Women’s 50 Backstroke

Kira Toussaint held onto her top seed from the morning in the sprint back event, touching the wall in 26.04 That drops a tenth of a second from her season best and moves her to second in the world this year in the event, moving .01 ahead of Emily Seebohm. Seebohm herself finished second in tonight’s final (26.13), just ahead of Toussaint’s teammate Ranomi Kromowidjojo (26.25).

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Xu Jiayu, the newly minted world record holder in the short course 100 back, was the winner in the 200 back to kick off his Singapore World Cup, edging out Australian Mitch Larkin 1:48.93 to 1:49.26. Xu led the entire race, and was able to hold off a charging Larkin at the finish. That is just off Xu’s top ranked time from the Tokyo World Cup. The two were well ahead of the rest of the field, with Israel’s Yakov Yan Toumarkin finishing third in 1:51.98.  

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Hosszu was back in the pool for the 200 butterfly, this time coming away with a decisive win in 2:02.86. She finished more than a second ahead of China’s Zhang Yufei (2:03.93). The next closest finisher was Germany’s Alexandra Wenk, who was 2:08.60 for third.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

China’s Li Zhuhao posted a huge season best to come away with the win in the 100 fly. Li won the race in 49.64, dropping a second from his season best from this morning to move to second in the world rankings. He finished more than a second ahead of second place finisher Matthew Temple (50.70). Notably, Joseph Schooling was fourth here in 51.05, slightly off his morning swim of 50.97.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Russian Yulia Efimova was just off her season-best time of 2:15.62 in tonight’s finals, touching first in 2:16.05. In second was China’s Ye Shiwen in a very strong 2:18.39 that moves her to second in the world rankings. That time is just three tenths of a second off China’s national record. In third was Russian Vitalina Simonova (2:20.96).

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Yan Zibei of China had a huge swim in the 100 breast, dropping more than half a second from his season best to move up to first in the world rankings for this season. Yan touched in 56.34, about three tenths ahead of Russian Anton Chupkov (56.69). In third was Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich (56.81).

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Sarah Sjostrom took her second win of the night in the women’s 50 free, out-racing Kromowidjojo to the wall 23.21 to 23.46. This breaks Kromowidjojo’s streak in this event over the last few World Cup stops, and moves Sjostrom up to #1 in the world for this season. In third was Denmark’s Pernille Blume (23.67), just ahead of Heemskerk (23.69).  

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Morozov added a second win in the men’s 50 free, sneaking under his own World Cup record by just .01 en route to a win in 20.48. Michael Andrew finished second behind Morozov for the second time today in 20.94. That is Andrew’s first time under 21 seconds this season and moves him to third in the world rankings. In third was Australian Kyle Chalmers (21.06), while Pieroni was fourth (21.44).
