2018 Asian Games Day 3 Prelims: Sun Yang Takes Top Seed in 400 Free

The 2018 Asian Games continued with the Day 3 preliminaries from Indonesia.

Some of the biggest names in swimming put together some impressive performances in the first two days of the meet. Sun Yang and Rikako Ikee were in the mix with strong prelim swims.

Here is what happened in the Day 3 prelims:

Women’s 50 Back

China started the third day of the meet with a strong finish, taking the top two seeds in the women’s 50 backstroke.

Xiang Liu took the top spot in 27.83, followed by Yuanhui Fu, who finished in 28.12.

Japan’s Natsumi Sakai took the third spot at 28.25, followed by Korea’s Hanbyeol Park (28.69) and Japan’s Anna Konishi (28.69), who tied for the fourth seed.

Hong Kong went 6-7 behind Hoi Au (28.81) and Toto Wong (28.94) and Korea’s Youngyeon Shin was eighth (29.10).

Men’s 50 Free

Just four tenths of a second separate the top seed and the eighth seed in the men’s 50 freestyle, which should set up a pretty exciting final.

China’s Hexin Yu took the top seed at 22.21, nearly two tenths ahead of Hong Kong’s Kenneth To (22.38).

India’s Virdhawal Vikram Khade took the third seed in 22.43, followed by Japan’s Katsumi Nakamura (22.50), Singapore’s Tzen Wei Teong (22.56), Chinese Taipei’s Chienliang Lin (22.60), Japan’s Shunichi Nakao (22.62) and Kazakstan’s Adilbek Mussin (22.63).

Women’s 400 IM

The 400 IM prelims quickly turned in to a set up for a showdown in the finals between Japan’s Yui Ohashi and China’s Min Zhou. Both competitors were three seconds faster than the rest of the field and within a second of each other.

Shashi took the top seed in 4:42.11, ahead of Zhou (4:42.83).

Japan’s Sakiko Shimizu took the third seed in 4:45.88, followed by Vietnam’s Thi Anh Vien Nguyen (4:47.56), Korea’s Seoyeong Kim (4:48.59) and China’s Chang Yang (4:53.56).

Indonesia’s Azzara Permatahani took the seventh spot at 4:53.58 and Hong Kong’s Hoi Kiu Lam took the eighth seed at 4:58.54.

Men’s 200 Breast

The Japanese 1-2 punch in the breaststroke took care of business in the 200 breast prelims as Ippei Watanabe (2:11.92) and Yasuhiro Koseki (2:12.77) took the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, sandwiched around China’s Zibei Yan (2:12.45).

Kyrgyzstan’s Denis Petrashov took the fourth seed in 2:12.89, followed by China’s Haiyang Qin (2:13.51), Korea’s Sungjae Cho (2:14.05), Macau’s Man Hou Chao (2:15.34) and Jordan’s Amro Al Wir (2:16.15).

Women’s 100 Fly

Rikako Ikee has been one of the world’s most dominant swimmers this year and she is in the mix for another championship after the prelims of the 100 fly.

Ikee has the second seed at 57.81, just behind China’s Yufei Zhang (57.68), setting up what should be an entertaining duel in the final.

Korea’s Sehyeon An took the third seed at 58.97, followed by Japan’s Ai Soma (59.16), Korea’s Yerin Park (59.57), China’s Xintong Lin (59.94), Singapore’s Jing Wen Quah (1:00.08) and Hong Kong’s Kin Lok Chan (1:00.39).

Singapore’s Ting Wen Quah (1:00.41) missed the final by two hundredths of a second.

Men’s 400 Free

Sun Yang cruised to the top seed in the men’s 400 free to close out the individual preliminaries for Day 3.

The Chinese star finished in 3:49.13, to finish ahead of Kosuke Hagino (3:50.67).

Korea’s Hojoon Lee took the third seed in 3:52.80, followed by China’s Ji Xinjie (3:53.11), Japan’s Naito Ehara (3:53.24), Vietnam’s Huu Kim Son Nguyen (3::54.01), Jordan’s Khader Ghetrich Baqlah (3:54.27) and Indonesia’s Aflah Fadlan Prawira (3:54.45).
