2017 NJCAA Championships Day Two Finals: Indian River Extends Lead Over Competition

Indian River continued to dominate the competition during day two finals of the 2017 NJCAA Championships. The Pioneers won two relays each on both the men’s and women’s sides, plus all but one of the individual events swum in finals.

The only event not won by a Pioneer was the men’s 400 IM where Iowa Lake’s Hylton Collinson collected his second individual gold.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

Indian River kick-started night two with a dominating win in the women’s 200 free relay. The relay team of Courtney Perrett (23.64), Osianna McReed (22.51), Courtney Stewart (23.55), and Malin Wallen (23.42) finished with a time of 1:33.12, more than seven seconds ahead of the competition.

Southern Georgia State’s Nikki Daley (24.90), Brittany Herndon (25.24), Bekah Morris (25.25), and Delaney Smith (24.86) grabbed second overall with a time of 1:40.25, while Iowa Central’s Jana Burner (25.27), Kailie Valentine (26.10), Grace Nordquist (25.20), and Sandra Alonso Rivas (24.00) were third with a 1:40.57.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

On the men’s side, the race was a bit closer with the top three teams finishing within five seconds of one another.

Indian River’s relay team of Cameron Newton (20.73), Gavin Erdmann (19.62), John Fauteux (20.16), and Nicholas Loomis (20.40) touched first overall with a 1:20.91.

Picking up second was Iowa Central’s Keagan Wilson (21.37), Badr Bensassila (21.82), Nicholas Brunelli (21.87), and Lucas Wittmann (20.30) with a final time of 1:25.36.

Third went to Southern Georgia State’s Zac Elz (21.31), Kyle Martin (21.63), Andrew Brown (21.83), and Jake Davis (21.27) and their time of 1:26.04)

 Women’s 1-meter Diving

Adrian Warning led Indian River to a sweep of the podium with a top showing of 442.85 points in the women’s 1-meter diving. Teammates Chastity Haxton and Domineeka Luis picked up second and third place with scores of 392.80 and 380.55.

 Women’s 50 Back

Meagan Abad led the Pioneers to another Indian River sweep of the podium, stopping the clock at a 26.11 for gold in the 50 back.

Courtney Stewart and Kamryn Gallowich added second and third place finishes of 26.43 and 27.48 respectively.

South Georgia State’s Bekah Morris posted a fourth place finish of 28.69, while Lynx’s Haley McDonald was fifth with a 29.59.

Southwestern Oregon’s Annessa Clear (29.61), Genessee’s Angel Priest (29.68), and Southern Georgia State’s Skylar Tafelski (29.89) finished sixth through eighth.

Men’s 50 Back

Jason van der Touw of Indian River collected his second individual gold in the 50 back with a 23.19 finish. Van der Touw was followed to the wall by three teammates.

Jonas Olczyk grabbed second overall with a 23.33, followed by Guillaume Bolivard (23.43) and Joel Hansson (24.76).

Southwestern Oregon’s Taden Swing picked up fifth with a time of 25.04, while Iowa Central’s Isaac Sauer was sixth with a 25.14.

Southwestern Oregon teammates Michael Fields and Darr Breshears finished seventh and eighth with times of 25.29 and 25.51.

Women’s 400 IM

Indian River won yet again in the women’s 400 IM as Natalie Grothe posted a strong time of 4:32.90 to beat out teammate Madisyn Lyons by more than three seconds.

Lyons finished second in 4:36.03, and Southern Georgia State’s Kiana Ocasio-Molina took third in 4:44.77.

Also making the championship final were Iowa Lakes’ Monique Dias (4:45.81), Southern Georgia State’s Jessica Dunton (4:47.85), MCC’s Ashley VanDermeer (4:58.44), Erie’s Allie DeBiase (5:02.72) and SGSU’s Mira Henderson (5:07.11).

Men’s 400 IM

Iowa Lakes’ Hylton Collinson posted a dominant win in the 400 IM, posting a time of 3:54.56. No one else in the field got under 4:00, as Indian River’s Andrew Wojcik took second in 4:00.81 and his teammate Jacob Andrasco was well back in third in 4:12.48.

Iowa Central’s Austin Monette-Waters finished fourth in 4:15.78, just ahead of SWOCC’s Shane Williams (4:16.43). Also competing in the top heat were SGSC’s Andrew Brown (4:17.89), Iowa Central’s Devon Anderson (4:22.80) and Genesee’s Kyle Podlaski (4:25.71).

Women’s 100 Fly

Indian River swept the top four spots in the 100 fly, and only Indian River swimmers broke 1:00 in the event. Osianna McReed was the champion in the event, touching in 55.20, more than a second ahead of teammate Morgan Holt, who grabbed second in 56.41.

Ianthe van der Westhuizen took third in 57.63, and teammate Kamryn Gallowich took fourth in 59.64.

Iowa Central’s Kailie Valentine finished fifth in 1:00.35, followed by teammates Jana Burner (1:00.52) and Grace Nordquist (1:01.36). MCC’s Alison McGregor was eighth in 1:03.32.

Men’s 100 Fly

Indian River swept the top two spots yet again as Nicholas Loomis blasted an impressive time of 4.64, and teammate Gabriele Sasia joined him under 50 seconds with a second-place time of 49.81.

Coming in at an even 50.00 was Iowa Central’s Lucas Wittmann, and that was good enough for third place overall.

Indian River teammates Jonas Olczyk and Harrison Howerton tied for fourth in 51.02, and they were followed by Iowa Lakes’ Jakub Murici (51.20), Indian River’s Paul Tobin (51.22) and Iowa Central’s Keagan Wilson (51.40).

Women’s 200 Free

Indian River again swept the three spots on the podium in the women’s 200 free, but it took a huge effort for Courtney Perrett to hold off teammate Malin Wallen on the last 50. Perrett touched in 1:52.96, just ahead of Wallen’s 1:53.12.

Also finishing on the podium was Indian River’s Sarah Dostie, who finished in 1:55.08.

Lynx’s Madi Ewald grabbed fourth in 1:58.46, and she was followed by SGSU’s Nikki Daley (1:58.86), MCC’s Megan Mack (2:00.35) and SGSC teammates Brittany Herndon (2:01.61) and Bekah Morris (2:05.69).

Men’s 200 Free

In an amazing team performance, Indian River put seven swimmers into the championship final, and they swept the top seven spots in the event. Luka Tomic provided the fireworks as he led wire-to-wire on the way to a victory, finishing in 1:36.28. Teammate Jason Van Der Touw grabbed second in 1:37.63, and John Fauteux was third in 1:38.41.

Cameron Newton just missed the podium with his time of 1:38.64, and just behind were Gavin Erdmann (1:40.53), Alexander Berggren (1:42.01) and Derek Lobrutto (1:43.07).

The only non-Indian River swimmer in the field was South Georgia State’s Zac Elz, who finished eighth in 1:44.93.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Indian River continued to dominate the relays at the NJCAA Championships with a top showing in the women’s 400 medley relay. Courtney Stewart (57.60), Courtney Perrett (1:04.06), Morgan Holt (57.23), and Osianna McReed posted a final time of 3:50.50 to be the only team beneath the 4-minute mark.

Iowa Central’s Sandra Alonso Rivas (1:02.23), AnnMarie Spiker (1:07.10), Kailie Valentine (58.50), and Jana Burner (55.03) picked up second with a final time of 4:03.86.

Third went to Southern Georgia State’s Kiana Ocasio-Molina (1:01.51), Delaney Smith (1:11.24), Jessica Dunton (59.43), and Nikki Daley (54.29), who posted a combined time of 4:06.47.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

The Indian River men scorched the competition in the 400 medley relay, finishing more than ten seconds ahead of the competition. Teammates Jason van der Touw (49.41), John Fauteux (52.93), Nicholas Loomis (46.88), and Luka Tomic (45.04) posted a combined time of 3:14.26 for the gold.

Iowa Central’s Devon Anderson (53.39), Dylan VanPletzen (56.69), Lucas Wittmann (50.32), and Keagan Wilson (46.87) touched second with a time of 3:27.27.

The relay team of Marko Dominic (56.15), Hylton Collinson (56.56), Keagan Blau (53.22), and Jakub Murici (46.17) of Iowa Lakes rounded out the top three with a final time of 3:32.10.
