2017 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships: Emory Squares Up for Team Titles

Emory set themselves up for the championship title with top seeds in three of the six individual events this morning. Senior Andrew Wilson squared up for a run at his own national record in the 200 breast, while UW-Eau Claire’s Samantha Senczyszyn topped the women’s field for a run at a breaststroke sweep.

Women’s 100 Free

NCAA Record: 48.98 – Kendra Stern, Amherst (2010)

Top 8: 50.97

Top 16: 51.31

Emory’s Fiona Muir dashed to the top seed in the women’s 100 free, being one of two athletes under the 50-second mark. Muir stopped the clock at a 49.93, followed closely by Wiliams’ Emma Waddell and her time of 49.99.

Abby  VanHarn of Calvin picked up the third place seed with a 50.19, followed by Trinity’s Lindsay Hagmann’s 50.32.

Careleton’s Caroline Mather took fifth with a 50.74, just ahead of a tie between Pomona-Pitzer’s Madison Kauai and Emory’s Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe. The two delivered matching times of 50.77.

Marissa Bergh of Emory qualified eighth overall with a 50.82.

Men’s 100 Free

NCAA Record: 43.16 – Zachary Turk, Kenyon (2012)

Top 8: 44.80

Top 16: 45.17

Oliver Smith of Emory put himself in range of the NCAA record with a 43.54 in prelims of the men’s 100 free. Smith’s time sits a shy .38 seconds away from the 2012 record of 43.16.

Rowan’s Jesse Novak and Keene State’s Ryan Boraski held a tight race for the second and third place seeds, finishing a slim .05 seconds apart. Novak touched with a 43.60 for the second place seed, just ahead of Boraski’s 43.65.

Zachary Wagner of Denison turned in a 44.21 for the fourth place seed, while Loras’ Isaac Casey was fifth overall with a 44.40.

Buffalo State’s Connor Merger (44.55), UC Santa Cruz’ Ivan Garin (44.72), and Chicago’s Alexander Farrell (44.77) rounded out the top eight qualifiers.

Women’s 200 Back

NCAA Record: 1:56.23 – Brittany Sasser, Amherst (2008)

Top 8: 2:00.37

Top 16: 2:02.88

Olivia Jackson of Williams uncorked a prelims swim of 1:56.43 in prelims of the women’s 200 back. Jackson slashed 2.01 seconds off her entry time of 1:58.44, setting herself up for a solid run at the title.

St. Thomas’ Emma Paulson turned in a 1:59.22 for the second place seed, followed by Bates’ Sara Daher and her 1:59.62.

Christina Belforti of Union touched fourth overall in prelims with a 1:59.78, while top-seed Cindy Cheng of Emory posted a 1:59.95 for fifth.

Kenyon’s Delaney Ambrosen (2:00.52), Rose-Hulman’s Eleanore Hong (2:00.61), and Wash U’s Nicole Zanolli (2:00.70) completed the top eight qualifiers.

Men’s 200 Back

NCAA Record: 1:43.49 – Harrison Curley, Kenyon (2015)

Top 8: 1:47.84

Top 16: 1:49.17

It was a tight field in the men’s 200 back led by MIT’s Gabriel Schneider and his top qualifying time of 1:46.16.

Recent NCAA record holder Benjamin Lin of Williams posted a second place seed of 1:46.22, followed by close qualifying times of 1:46.58 and 1:46.60 between Denison’s Jackson Lindell and Claremont’s Matthew Williams.

Matthew Rogers of Emory turned in a fifth place qualifying time of 1:46.70, while Tufts’ Kingsley Bowen took sixth with a 1:46.96.

NYU’s Carlos Colmenares and Denison’s Jason Wesseling qualified seventh and eighth respectively with times of 1:47.02 and 1:47.15.

Women’s 200 Breast

NCAA Record: 2:12.20 – Samantha Senczyszyn, UW-Eau Claire (2016)

Top 8: 2:18.26

Top 16: 2:20.65

UW-Eau Claire’s Sam Senczyszyn set herself up for a sweep of the breast events with a top seed in the women’s 200 breast. Senczyszyn posted a 2:14.17, scraping .05 seconds off her seed time of 2:14.22.

Julia Wilson of Kenyon picked up the second place seed with a 2:15.53, followed closely by Williams’ Caroline White and her 2:!5.66.

Emory senior Annelise Kowalsky turned in a 2:16.01 for the fourth place seed, while Conn College’s Mary Erb was fifth with a 2:16.55.

Emory’s Ashley Daniels (2:17.20), Johns Hopkins’ Kaitlin Jones (2:17.47), and Denison’s KT Kustritz’s (2:17.61) were sixth through eighth.

Men’s 200 Breast

NCAA Record: 1:52.97 – Andrew Wilson, Emory (2015)

Top 8: 2:01.28

Top 16: 2:02.91

The king of breaststroke, Emory’s Andrew Wilson, cruised to the top seed in the men’s 200 with a 1:55.99. Wilson, who owns the national record, could easily challenge his own record in finals tonight.

Kenyon’s Ian Reardon maintained his spot as the second place seed with a 1:57.83, while teammate Trevor Manz qualified third with a 1:59.23.

Tanner Sonnek of Gustavus posted a 1:59.77 to qualify fourth, followed by Wash U’s Michael Lagieski and his time of 1:59.78.

NYU’s Timothy Kou (2:00.02), DePauw’s Samuel McManus (2:00.40), and Chicago’s Reona Yamaguchi (2:00.76) completed the top heat.
