With a continued focus on the health and wellness of USA Water Polo members and the water polo community in regards to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are announcing the cancellation of several upcoming events. This comes on the heels of the CDC announcement recommending no gatherings of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks.

Following an announcement earlier today from FINA (Fédération internationale de natation) regarding the cancellation of all international water polo events over the next three months, USA Water Polo has announced the cancellation of the 2020 FINA Men’s and Women’s Intercontinental Tournament. The event was scheduled to be held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana this April 28-May 3.

The FINA Men’s and Women’s Intercontinental Tournament would have been the highest-profile international tournament to be scheduled in America since the FINA Men’s Junior World Water Polo Championship was held in Long Beach and Los Alamitos, California in 2007.

In addition, following the cancellation of competition by multiple conferences competing in women’s collegiate water polo for the spring season, the inaugural USA Water Polo Division III Women’s National Championship has been canceled. This event was scheduled for May 8-10 in Southern California. The event will now be scheduled for May, 2021.

Lastly, week three of the 2020 National League, scheduled for April 4-5 in Thousand Oaks, CA  and the National League Championship/Fisher Cup set for May 16-17 in La Jolla, CA has been canceled.

All other USA Water Polo events will be evaluated in the coming weeks.

Extraordinary Events In Swimming History:

Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, France, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil and Japan have all had major meets affected by the coronavirus pandemic, while in the United States, the NCAA Championships have been cancelled and USA Swimming has imposed a 30-day suspension on all events, while Canada is considering what to do about its Olympic trials early next month. In Italy, where swimmers are struggling to maintain normal routines, can’t get to practice and in some cases find pool time, a #stopolympics campaign was launched by the Nuoto website calling on solidarity among swimming nations to recognise that Olympic preparations have been blown off course and that it would be in the interests of fairness to postpone the Games for a time of calm beyond the coronavirus crisis.
