Swim Poll of the Week: 68% Believe Ivy League Made Right Choice to Cancel Fall Sports

This is the Swim Poll of the Week for Thursday July 23, 2020, sponsored by Strechcordz Swim Training Products. In our last poll, we wanted to know: Do you agree with conferences like the Ivy League for cancelling fall sports as COVID cases continue to rise in the United States?

The Ivy League officially decided on Wednesday, July 8 to postpone its fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will not entertain any sports beginning play until after Jan. 1, 2021. The decision, which was expected, was reported by CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein, and confirmed by the conference in a release. The Ivy League’s fall sports include football, field hockey, soccer, cross country and volleyball, and whether their seasons will be played in the spring will be determined at a later date.

Reports also indicated that the Ivy League will make a decision in mid-July on the fate of winter sports, including men’s and women’s swimming. Those sports typically begin practice in the fall, but that scenario seems unlikely with the Ivy League putting a halt to fall athletics through the end of 2020 – at the earliest.

The NESCAC, often referred to as the Division III Ivy League, also made a huge decision in cancelling fall sports for the semester. This decision does not necessarily impact swimming specifically, as most NESCAC schools don’t start official practice until early November, but this decision doesn’t mean winter sports will be unaffected. If the virus is not under control later on in the semester, then it is very possible that winter sports will meet the same fate.

But the question remains for the swim poll of the week: Do you agree with conferences like the Ivy League for cancelling fall sports as COVID cases continue to rise in the United States?
