ASU Coach Bob Bowman announced that his entire swimming and diving team will redshirt and only train in 2020-21, with the expectation that the entire roster will return in 2021-22. Bowman believes, “This decision promotes the health and safety of our student-athletes, enhances their educational opportunities and allows time to rebuild and refocus on performing at the highest levels of NCAA competition.”

014 YMCA OF CENTRAL OHIO CANCELS COMPETITIVE SWIMMING FOR 2020-21 SEASON

Following the decision made by the YMCA of Central Florida, the YMCA of Central Ohio also announced the cancellation of all competitive swimming for the 2020-21 season at their metropolitan YMCAs. In addition to not being able to compete, swimmers will not be allowed to practice.

016 THE 1980 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS REPRESENTED A ROAD TO NOWHERE

President Jimmy Carter had announced that the United States would boycott the 1980 Games in Moscow in response to the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in late 1979. The United States, however, still held its Olympic Trials after the conclusion of the swimming events in Moscow—an unusual circumstance for athletes who were robbed of the opportunity to compete on their sport’s biggest stage.

I believe this red shirt idea is a must for college swimming. All of us would like COVID – 19 to be gone and done. But it’s here until we deal with it. This might give a clue to the seriousness of this virus.
