S.C. College Invitational Day 1: Gamecocks Swim to Commanding Leads

The South Carolina College Invitational began yesterday in Columbia, SC. Host school University of South Carolina matched up against University of North Carolina – Wilmington and Queens University of Charlotte. Friday’s events consisted of half the swimming schedule, along with the 3m board event for the divers.

COLUMBIA, S.C.— South Carolina swimming and diving put in a strong performance Friday on the first day of the S.C. College Invitational. Matched up against UNC Wilmington and Queens University, the Gamecocks won 13 of the 20 events to take a commanding leading through day one.

Queens Press Release – Men

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men’s swimming team returned to action on Friday competing in the 2020 South Carolina Winter Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina.

Competing against NCAA Division I institutions South Carolina and UNC Wilmington, the Royals collected three event wins and multiple podium finishes.

Sophomore Alex Kunert won twice in individual competition beginning with a first place finish in the 200-Yard I.M. with a finals time of 1:47.76. Kunert’s second victory came via a 1:49.04 time in the 200-Yard Butterfly race. Junior Hendrik Faberwas also an individual winner, claiming first overall in the 500-Yard Freestyle.

The 200-Yard Freestyle Team finished second overall, while Jan Delkeskamp (200-Yard I.M.) and Alen Mosic (100-Yard Freestyle) were also second place finishers in their respective events.

The final day of the invitational begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. from the Carolina Natatorium.

Women

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women’s swimming team returned to action on Friday competing in the 2020 South Carolina Winter Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina.

Competing against NCAA Division I institutions South Carolina and UNC Wilmington, the Royals registered two event wins and multiple podium finishes.

The 200-Yard Freestyle Relay Team of Polina Lapshina, Lexie Baker, Hannah Foster, and Wanda Dollmayer opened the night with a win, turning in a time of 1:33.05. Freshman Yuliia Stadnyk was the Royals’ lone individual winner, taking the top spot in the 200-Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:02.10, more than two second ahead of teammate Georgia DaCruz.

Francesca Bains (500-Yard Freestyle), Mikaela Fullerton (100-Yard Breaststroke), Bobbi Gichard (200-Yard Backstroke), and Lapshina (100-Yard Freestyle) all had runner-up finishes in their respective events. The night ended with a second place showing by the 400-Yard Medley Relay Team of Rachel Massaro, Fullerton, DaCruz, and Lapshina.

The final day of the invitational begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. from the Carolina Natatorium.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Three Seahawks posted second-place finishes on the men’s side to highlight UNCW’s outing on Friday at the South Carolina College Invitational.

Heading up the Seahawk trio of runner-up finishes were Gianmichael D’Alessandro in the 100 Breaststroke, Will Countie in the 200 Backstroke and Connor Forsythe in the 200 Butterfly.

Adding strong swims were Mitch Curlee finishing third in the 200 IM and Brent Hoshall taking third in the 200 Backstroke.

In diving, Courtney Klausen took third in the women’s 1-meter and Kolbein Bjugan was fourth in the men’s 3-meter board.

The Seahawk men took second in the 400 Medley Relay and third in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

The meet continues Saturday. It’s UNCW’s final meet of the season before heading to Christiansburg, Va., in February for the Colonial Athletic Association championships.
