Notre Dame Swimming Leads Pitt After Day 1

Notre Dame swimming dominated Pittsburgh in the first stint of the two-day meet on Friday on both the men’s and women’s sides. The women lead the Panthers 121-46, while the men bested the ACC foe 112-55.

Beginning with the women’s 200 Free Relay, the Irish team of Abbie Dolan, Rachel Wittmer, Kelly Jacob and Carly Quast turned in a winning time of 1:33.27. Then, with the start to individual events, Notre Dame raced out to a hot streak, winning the first seven events.

Luciana Thomas kicked it off for the Irish, winning the women’s 500 Free with a 4:54.64, while Zach Yeadon turned in a win on the men’s side of the 500 Free with an NCAA B-Cut 4:19.61. Coleen Gillilan touched the wall in 53.19 for a win in the women’s 100 Fly, while Aaron Schultz did his part in the men’s 100 Fly with a victory (48.83).

Irish backstroker Bayley Stewart showed her skills in the 200 Back, winning with a 1:57.54, and, again, the Notre Dame men followed suit, with Sadler McKeen posting a win in 1:47.66 in the men’s 200 Back.

Gillilan marked her second victory of the evening in the women’s 100 Breast, an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:01.33. Wittmer contributed her first individual victory after aiding the Irish in the women’s 200 Free Relay with a first-place finish in the women’s 100 Free (51.07).

Notre Dame swimming swept the 400 IM on both sides, with Thomas (4:19.52) posting her second win of the night and Mix Miranda (3:52.91) marking his first. To close the night, the Irish cleaned house in the 400 Medley Relays, posting wins for the men and women.

On the diving side, men’s platform standout David Petrison continued his success, winning with a final score of 255.75. For the women, Kelly Straub placed second in the women’s platform competition with a 221.33.
