Konosuke Yanagimoto has a stellar week at the 2020 Tokyo Special Swimming Tournament, setting a pair of national high school records.

Yanagimoto went 1:47.85 in the 200 freestyle. That time is a cut of some two seconds from his previous best, per reports. It would’ve made the A final of the 2019 World Junior Championships, finishing eighth in an event won by Luca Urlando of the United States in 1:46.97. Urlando holds the American 15-16 national age-group record in the 200 free at 1:47.73.

Yanagimoto is within two seconds of the fastest 2020 time by a Japanese swimmer in the 200 free (1:45.82 by Katsuhiro Matsumoto). Matsumoto won a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in the event in a national record of 1:45.22.

Yanagimoto followed that up with a 49.41 in the 100 free. It’s not far off from the NAG mark for 15-16 year olds set by Caeleb Dressel in 2013 at 49.28.
