Junior National Champion Sophia Karras Verbally Commits to Notre Dame for 2021

NEW COMMIT: The University of Notre Dame has received their third early verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from Albertson, N.Y. distance freestyle standout Sophia Karras.

She will join Mary Cate Pruitt and Maggie Graves as a member of the Fighting Irish’s class of 2025.

Karras does her club swimming with Long Island Aquatic Club and owns the 2020 Olympic Trials cut in the 1500m free with two additional U.S. Open standards. She capped off her extremely successful summer season at Junior Nationals where she won the mile, took fourth in the 800m free, and place 12th in the 400m free. Last winter, she recorded six best times at Metropolitan Seniors before going on to finish ninth in both the 1000 free and mile at NCSAs.

A current junior at Herricks High School, Karras is a five-time New York Federation Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American most recently earned bronze in the 500 free and took 11th in the 200 free as a junior while placing ninth and 14th, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

200 free – 1:50.99
500 free – 4:48.16
1000 free – 9:56.60
1650 free – 16:42.48

In LCM, her best times include:

200m free – 2:06.40
400m free – 4:18.97
800m free – 8:48.20
1500m free – 16:39.40 (Olympic Trials cut)

Karras has consistently made improvements each season and will make an immediate impact in the Fighting Irish’s distance group, even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 500 free as well as placed top-18 in the mile at the 2019 ACC Championships where Notre Dame finished fourth overall in the team standings.
