Deniz Ertan Wins Three Times as Georgia Tech Sweeps Carson-Newman

Deniz Ertan won three events Friday night as Georgia Tech handled both meets against Carson-Newman.

Ertan led the women’s team to a 187.5-72.5 victory. The men won by a similar score of 183-77, in a meet that didn’t include diving down in Atlanta.

The Turkish international won all three of her races across an impressive range. Ertan prevailed in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:53.66, winning by nearly 30 seconds. She led teammate Rei Kuramoto to the wall in the 200 butterfly, in a time of 2:00.75. Then in the 200 individual medley, Ertan went 2:04.44 to edge out Kuramoto by .05 seconds.

Freshman Anna Hadjiloizou showed her mettle again, the newcomer for the spring semester winning twice. The Cypriot sprinter claimed the 50 free in 23.52, edging teammate Caroline Porterfield. She went 51.20 to win the 100 free and anchored winning times in the 400 medley and 200 free relays.

Ariana Dirkzwager won the 100 backstroke and finished second in the 200. Clarissa Sabin won the 100 breast and finished second to teammate Claudia Butterfield in the 200 breast. Second to Sabin in the 100 breast was 500 free champ McKenzie Campbell. Zora Ripkova won the 100 fly and was the runner-up in the 200 free to Sophie Murphy. Like Hadjiloizou, Murphy was on both winning relays.

Carson-Newman’s lone win on the women’s side came via Kyla Blakemore, who went 2:00.91 to capture the 200 back.

Nils Bognar picked up three wins to guide the Yellow Jackets’ men’s team. The freshman went 50.01 to win the 100 back. He also claimed the 200 back and edged Carson-Newman’s Henrique Januario by .02 in 1:50.91 to claim the 200 IM.

The Georgia Tech distance contingent paved the way to the win. Mert Kilavuz and Charles Perk went 1-2 in both the 1,000 free and 500 free. Kilavuz was second to teammate Antonio Romero in the 200 fly.

Romero in turn was the runner-up in the 100 fly to Batur Unlu. He won the 200 free ahead of teammate Berke Saka, who then won the 100 free. Daniel Kertesz did the unusual double of the 100 breast and 50 free.

Januario won the 200 breast for CNU, just edging Georgia Tech’s Julian Killius. Killius was also second in the 100 breast. Januario also finished second in the 200 IM.
