David Johnston, Jake Foster, Carson Foster Help Texas Men Knock Off NC State Again

For the second time in as many days, the Texas men edged out NC State in a dual meet, and yet again, brothers Carson Foster and Jake Foster were at the center of the action for the Longhorn men while David Johnston got into the win column with a head-to-head win over the Wolfpack’s Will Gallant in the 1000 freestyle. After a 98-88 win Friday night, Texas took an 80-68 victory Saturday.

Johnston recorded a mark of 8:41.62 in his 1000 win, just missing the top time in the country of 8:41.61 that he established last month. Gallant ended up coming in at 8:44.48, good for No. 2 in the national rankings. A few races later, Texas fifth-year swimmer Danny Krueger won the 100 free in 42.67, beating NC State’s Nyls Korstanje by just one hundredth.

The elder Foster brother, Jake, won the 200 breaststroke as he sprinted home in 29.59 to get ahead of Texas teammate Caspar Corbeau. Foster won in 1:53.62, with Corbeau coming in at 1:53.71 and Braden Vines finishing third (1:56.48) for a Texas sweep. Up next, Carson dominated the 200 butterfly in 1:40.83, moving him to No. 3 nationally behind the Arizona State duo of Leon Marchand and Alex Colson. The younger Foster sibling will likely choose to swim either the 200 fly or 200 back on the final day of the NCAA Championships.

In one-meter diving, Texas’ Nick Harris picked up the win in 412.05.

NC State, meanwhile, picked up only one individual win but scored two relay first-place finishes to stay in contention. David CurtissNoah HendersonLuke Miller and Korstanje opened the meet with a 1:16.30 win in the 200 free relay. Later on, Kacper Stokowski won the 100 backstroke, the event in which he is the reigning NCAA champion, in 45.63 while teammate Aidan Hayes touched second (46.66).

Stokowski followed up his individual win by leading off the Wolfpack’s 400 medley relay in 44.79, eclipsing Cal’s Destin Lasco (44.88) for the top time in the country. Mason Hunter, Korstanje and Hunter Tapp finished the relay in 3:04.22 for a three-second win.
