Carmel High Boys Flourish at Sectionals; Set Up State-Title Chase

One week after its girls team captured a 35th consecutive Indiana state title, Carmel High positioned itself to capture a seventh straight boys crown when that gender’s state champs are held next weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. Carmel rolled to the Section Nine on Saturday, scoring 543 points to beat runnerup Noblesville (353 points) in comfortable fashion.

Carmel won all three relays, going 1:32.14 in the 200 medley relay, 1:24.24 in the 200 freestyle relay and 3:08.47 in the 400 freestyle relay. If history and the girls’ performance are any indication, coach Chris Plumb’s squad should be even more impressive at states. At Sectionals, the Greyhounds notched 1-2-3 finishes in seven of the eight individual events, only the 50 freestyle not featuring a sweep.

Senior Griffin Hadley checked in with victories in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, thanks to respective times of 45.35 and 1:37.93. Another double winner in individual action was Augustus Rothrock, who prevailed in the 200 individual medley in 1:48.24 and claimed the 100 butterfly in 49.29.

Freshman standout Carter Lancaster got to the wall first in the 100 backstroke in 49.75 while his brother, sophomore Kayden Lancaster topped the field in the 500 freestyle in 4:33.10. Ryan Malicki was the winner of the 100 breaststroke in 55.04, with freshman brother Brandon Malicki going 57.22 for the silver medal.
