Brett Hawke Joins USC Swimming & Diving As Volunteer Assistant Coach

Brett Hawke, a two-time Australian Olympian and nine-time NCAA champion at Auburn who served as his alma mater’s head coach for a decade, is joining the USC women’s and men’s swimming and diving program as a volunteer assistant coach, Trojan head coach Jeremy Kipp announced today.

“The experience and knowledge that Brett brings to the Trojans is a remarkable asset,” Kipp said. “From his career as an elite swimmer to one of the world’s best coaches, Brett has seen and done it all and we are ecstatic that he is on the West Coast and lending his expertise to the Trojans.”

Said Hawke, “I am excited to join the staff at USC as a volunteer assistant. It’s a program steeped in excellence and tradition and the entire staff, led by Jeremy Kipp, is made up of a group of exceptional people.”

Brett Hawke was the Tigers women’s and men’s team head coach from 2009-2018, leading the men’s squad to a national crown in his debut season. He led Auburn to a combined 12 NCAA Top 10 finishes, 11 NCAA individual or relay titles, 479 All-American honors and 64 SEC individual or relay titles. In addition, he trained 14 Auburn swimmers who became Olympians.

The 2009 NCAA Coach of the Year and the 2012 SEC Coach of the Year, Hawke has also coached at three Olympics as the Bahamas head coach in 2012 and a Brazil assistant coach in 2008 and 2016.

In addition to his new role with the Trojans, Hawke is also an executive with Fitter and Faster as its Development Director of Swim Camps.

At Auburn, Hawke was a 17-time All-American who helped led the Tigers to NCAA team titles in 1997 and 1999 (he swam there from 1997 to 1999), winning a national title in the 50y free in 1997 in addition to his eight NCAA relay crowns. He also competed on three Auburn SEC title teams while winning nine conference races.

Hawke has specialized in coaching sprinters and his men’s pupils include Olympians Cesar Cielo, Matt Targett, Fred Bousquet, Jakob Andkjaer and Alexei Puninski.

Among the top women’s swimmers Hawke coached were three-time NCAA sprinting champion Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace as well as NCAA champion freestylers Hayley Peirsol and Adrienne Binder and backstroke winners Margaret Hoelzer, Rachel Goh and Kirsty Coventry.

A five-time Australian champion, Brett Hawke is the former Australian record holder in the 50m free with a time of 22.07 that he set at the 2004 Olympic Games in the semifinal round.
