Zoe Bartel, Sancov Pick Up Two Victories Each at Iowa City Speedo Sectionals

The 2017 Speedo Sectionals in Iowa City continued with Zoe Bartel and Alexei Sancov picking up two victories each.

Gillian Davey of CIA turned in the top time in the women’s 400 IM with a final time of 4:14.47, dropping 9.11 seconds off her prelims time of 4:28.58. FAST’s Coleen Gillilan finished a close second with a 4:15.29, followed by DDST’s Emma Theobald’s 4:20.01.

EDI’s JohnThomas Larson took the top time in the men’s 400 IM with a time of 3:54.12, while teammate Peter Larson grabbed second with a 3:56.86. Christopher Hoce, swimming unattached, was third with a 3:57.68.

FAST swept the podium in the women’s 50 free, led by Kylee Alons. Alons posted the only sub-23 second swim of the evening with a 22.70. Her time sits as the new meet record, dashing past the 22.75 she set earlier in the meet. Teammates Zoe Bartel and Coleen Gillilan picked up second and third with times of 23.03 and 23.11.

Bartel returned not long after to dominate the competition in the women’s 200 breast, finishing more than four seconds ahead of the competition with a 2:08.11. Bartel’s time over-turned her own meet record of 2:09.45, which she had set earlier in the day. Davey was second overall with a 2:12.85, followed closely by Gillilan’s 2:12.95.

Alexei Sancov of TERA turned in the top time of the men’s 50 free, stopping the clock at a 20.29. Daniel Jacobson, swimming unattached, grabbed second with a 20.49, followed by STRM’s Andrew Trepanier’s 20.60.

Sancov later added a gold medal in the men’s 500 free with a winning time of 4:24.88, slashing 8.94 seconds off his prelims time of 4:33.82. Sancov’s time broke a 12-year old meet record of 4:27.51 from 2005. Chicago Wolfpack’s Jacob Furlong picked up second with a final time of 4:27.53, just ahead of Black Hawk Area’s Dylan Moffatt and his time of 4:29.76.

Justin Winnett, swimming unattached, claimed the gold in the men’s 200 breast with a 2:00.69, shaving 2.42 seconds off his prelims time of 2:03.11. BLA’s Samuel Pekarek was second with a 2:03.09, while iFly’s Forrest Frazier took third with a 2:03.84.

BNY’s Melissa Pish swam ahead of the competition in the women’s 500 free, stopping the clock at a final time of 4:48.80. EDI teammates Kelli McCarthy and Raime Jones completed the podium with times of 4:51.25 and 4:52.85 respectively.

Fort Collins’ ‘A’ and ‘B’ relays took first and second in the 400 medley relay. The ‘A’ team of Bayley Stewart, Zoe Bartel, Coleen Gillilan, and Kaylee Alons posted a final time of 3:36.58 for first and a new meet record. Edina Swim Club wrapped up the top three with a time of 3:48.51.

Edina Swim Club topped the competition in finals of the men’s 400 medley relay. Peter Larson, Nicholas Pullmans, Joshua Withers, and JohnThomas Larson combined to post a final 3:21.28, followed by Fort Collin’ 3:21.66. Terrapins Swim Team finished third overall with a 3:22.56.
