Visitation Victorious at Minnesota Girls Class A State Championships

In a tight finish Visitation scored 247.5 points and Hutchinson totaled 241 points for runner up honors at the 2017 Minnesota Girls Class A High School swimming state championships. Delano finished third with 183 points.

Fairbault’s Verity Wray-RaabolleBre BresnahanGesa Wilden, and Megan Gehrke touched first in the 200 medley relay in 1:45.69, a half second ahead of Delano’s Emma KernJordyn WentzelLaila Rosenow, and Lauren York in 1:46.30. Katelin PhelpsStella UrnessMaggie Broyles, and Ellie Wanninger were third for Breck School in 1:47.09.

Taylor Williams, a freshman from Benilde St. Marg won the 200 free with a 1:50.04 just ahead of Hutchinson’s Lexi Kucera in 1:50.18. Her eighth grade teammate Hailey Farrell was third with a 1:51.93. Farrell was runner up (5:01.17) in the 500 freestyle behind Delano senior Jordyn Wentzel (4:56.74). Visitation’s Sophie Kishish (5:09.01) was third.

Wentzel took home 100 breaststroke gold with a 1:03.74. Orono’s Caroline Gardner (1:04.54) and Monticello’s Alyssa Eckstein (1:05.04) were second and third.

With a 2:03.76 Blake School’s Madison Potter won the 200 IM. Visitation’s Kali Fischer (2:04.51) and Hill Murray School’s Gabi Baldwin (2:04.81) rounded out the podium. Baldwin later won the 100 backstroke with a 56.69 ahead of Phelps (57.71) and Richfield’s Abby Stok (58.03).

Another Hutchinson eight grader stood on the podium in the 50 freestyle. Grace Hanson won the event in 23.22 ahead of CEC Lumberjack’s Makayla Suominen (23.43) and Fairbault’s Gesa Wilden (23.55).

Saylor Hawkins of Breck School won diving with 439.60 points. Madison Potter of the Blake School touched in 54.63 for 100 fly victory. Behind her were Big Lake’s Gabbie Werner (56.86) and Monticello’s Grace Farnsworth (56.89).

Hanson, Bella ThovsonAinslea Jensen, and Lexi Kucera raced to a 1:35.85 to win the 200 freestyle relay for Hutchinson. Kern, York, Morgan Frank, and Wentzel went a 1:36.43 to secure runner up honors for Delano.

Hutchinson ended the meet with a solid relay win as the team of Hanson, Thovson, Farrell, and Kucera touched in 3:29.03 for the 400 freestyle relay title.
