Distance freestyler Ethan Apisa has recently announced that he is transferring from Old Dominion University to Virginia Tech. The Blacksburg, Va. native will join the Hokies for his final three years of eligibility.

Apisa was the CCSA champion in the men’s 1650 free this past season in a championship meet record time of 15:24.78, helping the Monarchs to a second-place team finish. He also recorded a runner-up finish in the 500 free (4:27.86) en route to being named CSCAA Scholar All-American during his freshman campaign.

Apisa told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce that I will be transferring to Virginia Tech this fall. I can’t wait to begin swimming under Coach Sergio Lopez. I am looking forward to being a part of the team being put together by Coach Sergio and Coach Josh Huger this upcoming season.”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:42.00
  • 500 free – 4:27.86
  • 1000 free – 9:23.18
  • 1650 free – 15:24.78

Apisa will join a talented Hokie distance group when he returns to Blacksburg under new head coach Sergio Lopez. He’ll join future classmate Lane Stone, the current team record holder in both the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events, as well as rising senior Michael Craddock. Stone and Craddock finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 1650 free at the 2018 ACC Championships where Virginia Tech finished sixth overall in the team standings.
