Virginia Cavaliers Win 2018 Women’s ACC Championship

The University of Virginia women’s swim and dive team captured the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference title ahead of University of Louisville and North Carolina State University.

Women’s 1650 Free (Fastest Seeded Heat)

NC State’s Hannah Moore won herself an ACC title and an NCAA A cut by virtue of her 15:48.37. Moore’s freshman teammate Tamila Holub followed her footsteps by placing second with a 16:00.14 while Louisville’s Sophie Cattermole took third with a 16:00.78.

Men’s Platform Diving

The men from Miami completed a 1-2 punch in the platform final with David Dinsmore and Zachary Cooper threw down scores of 500.10 and 429.50, respectively. Taking third in the final was Florida State’s Aidan Faminoff who scored a 333.65.

Women’s 200 back

The C final was taken by UVA’s Marcie Maguire who swam a 1:54.52 while her freshman teammate Erin Earley took the B final in a time of 1:53.16.

UVA freshman Paige Madden boosted the Cavaliers’ standings by winning the A final in a 1:51.81 while NC State’s Elise Haan (1:52.65) feel short of nabbing both backstroke events after she won last night’s 100 distance due to her second place finish in tonight’s A final. UVA’s Megan Moroney (1:53.28) took third while NC State’s Danik Huizinga (1:53.78), UVA’s Abby Ritcher (1:53.86) and Notre Dame’s Alice Treuth (1:54.13) followed behind. Rounding out the field in seventh and eighth place was Duke’s Maddie Hess (1:54.38) and VT’s Chloe Hicks (1:55.27).

Women’s 100 Free

UVA’s Kyla Valls took the C final with a 48.97. Louisville’s Casey Franz swam to a first place finish in the B final with her 48.58.

Taking the A final to no one’s surprise was Louisville’s Mallory Comerford (46.65), who lowered her own meet record from last year. UNC’s Caroline Baldwin took second in 47.44 while UVA’s Morgan Hill was third in 48.02. Coming in fourth was UVA’s Caitlin Cooper (48.05) while Louisville’s Lainey Visscher took fifth in 48.22. UVA duo of Eryn Eddy (48.46) and Laine Reed (48.71) followed with ND’s Abigail Dolan rounding out the top eight in 48.73.

Women’s 200 Breast

Winning the A final was Louisville’s freshman standout Mariia Astashkina who posted a swift 2:09.01 just ahead of FSU’s Natalie Pierce who touched in 2:09.05. Louisville’s Rachael Bradford-Feldman took third in 2:09.38. Two more Cardinals followed with Lauren James (2:09.95) and Morgan Friesen (2:10.31) touching ahead of NC State’s Julia Poole (2:11.57). Rounding out the A final was UM’s Annie Kyriakidis (2:12.14) and Pitt’s Lina Rathsack (2:12.27).

Women’s 200 Fly

UNC’s Madison Boswell (1:59.23) won the C final while NC State’s Jessica Horomanski (1:58.60) notched a B final win for the Wolfpack.

Louisville’s Grace Oglesby threw down a monster swim to win the A final with a swift 1:53.87 while UVA’s Jen Marrkand swam a 1:54.89 to get second with Virginia Tech’s Klaudia Nazieblo touched in 1:55.01 to take third. Fourth place was awarded to Duke’s Isabella Paez (1:55.45) while ND’s Nikki Smith and UNC’s Bryanna Cameron tied for fifth in a 1:57.17. Taking seventh and eighth was FSU’s Tayla Lovemore (1:57.32) and Duke’s Kylie Jordan (1:58.35).

NC State’s Madeline Kline (258.40) took the win her with Duke senior Maryellen Targo taking second with her score of 250.05. Taking third was VT’s Ashlynn Peters with a score of 239.25.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

UVA won the final race of the meet and the entire meet itself with their production of a 3:09.45, which lowered the old ACC record previously held by NC State. Taking second was Louisville who put together a 3:10.73 while UNC touched third in 3:14.91.
