Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel was awarded the Female Race of the Year for her efforts in the 100 free final in Rio, but before the Golden Goggles banquet Monday night, she spoke to Swimming World about her return to college swimming.

Manuel, who took a redshirt year in 2015-16 to prepare for the Olympic summer, explained how things have changed in her return to college and whether she considers herself a sophomore or junior. She also commented on the Ohio State Invite, where she watched teammate Katie Ledecky set a pair of American records before the two (along with Lia Neal and coach Greg Meehan) made the quick trip to New York City.
