Reece Whitley has experienced a mostly-successful 2017, setting a National High School record and being named Swimming World’s High School Swimmer of the Year before committing to attend Cal-Berkeley and winning four medals at the World Junior Championships. Friday morning, he sat down with Swimming World’s David Rieder to reflect on the whole year.

Whitley is competing this weekend at the Nation’s Capital Invitational, but he’s not swimming his typical breaststroke or IM events. Whitley started out the video by explaining what he gets out of swimming those events that are not his best, especially as he moves towards his college career.

Whitley went on to discuss the moments he’s most proud of in 2017, thinking back to his role as a captain on the World Junior Championships team. He also commented on his relationship with longtime coach Crystal Keelan, his upcoming cross-country move to Cal, whether he’s better at short course or long course and what his goals are for the upcoming summer of racing.
