Arkady Vyatchanin did not get to go to the Rio Olympics this summer after FINA refused to let him compete for Serbia, but he persevered through and posted strong swims at the U.S. Open in Minneapolis. Now, he’s back in competition and training in Gainesville, Fla.

At Winter Nationals, Vyatchanin finished second to Tom Shields in the men’s 100 back and then qualified first in the prelims of the 200 back Saturday morning. After that race, he discussed how training has been going since this summer, what he thinks about his times in Atlanta and what his goals will be for the upcoming season as he shifts his focus back to long course.
