UNLV’s Sofia Carnevale Posts Sub-1:00 100 Breast at Mountain West Championships

UNLV’s Sofia Carnevale won the women’s 100 breast in under one minute to highlight day three of the 2018 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships.

Heading into the final day of competition, Boise State sits in first place with 817 points, followed by Nevada (736.5), San Diego (734.5), Wyoming (657) and Colorado State (493).

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Boise State began day three with a win in the 400 medley relay, edging out the runner-up by .04. Allyson Kleinsorgen (53.28), Laura Williams (1:01.45), Emmie Jennings (53.05) and Abbey Sorensen (48.25) touched first in 3:36.03.

Wyoming took a close second in 3:36.07 while UNLV finished third in 3:36.77.

Women’s 400 IM

Colorado State’s Haley Rowley dropped an additional two seconds from her morning swim to win the gold tonight. The junior stopped the clock in 4:10.67.

San Diego’s Mckenna Meyer was second in 4:12.64 and her teammate Frida Berggren was third in 4:13.16.

Colorado State’s Marie Goodwyn (4:16.85), Boise State’s Emily Mathis (4:19.11), New Mexico’s Matea Sumajstoricic (4:19.33), Air Force’s Emma Strom (4:22.45) and San Diego’s Rachael Kelch (4:25.13) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Fly

San Diego’s Courtney Vincent was the only swimmer under the 53-second barrier in the 100 fly, winning the event in 52.89.

San Jose’s Brenna Bushey took second in 53.21 and Air Force’s Elise Hart was third in 53.75.

Boise State’s Emmie Jennings (53.77), Wyoming’s Hannah McLean-Leonard (53.79), New Mexico’s Kanoha Shinada (53.93), UNLV’s Katsiaryna Afanasyeva (53.96) and Wyoming’s Samantha Burke (54.53) also swam in the top heat.

Women’s 200 Free

The Mountain West 200 freestyle title came down to .01 with Emma Chard taking the crown. The senior won the event in 1:47.23, just out-touching the runner-up. She still owns the Mountain West meet and all-time record from 2016.

Nevada’s Rebecca Murray was a very close second in 1:47.24 while her teammate Andrea Cholodovskis Lima (1:47.36) finished third.

Nevada’s Diana Sokolowska (1:47.79), Boise State’s Cody Evans (1:48.38), New Mexico’s Adriana Palomino (1:48.42), Boise State’s Hill Hayley (1:48.59) and Wyoming’s Kelly Anna Sheldon (1:48.95) also competed in the A-final.

Women’s 100 Breast

UNLV’s Sofia Carnevale got her hands to the wall first in 59.87 as the only swimmer to break the one minute barrier. The sophomore set a new pool record but was .02 off the Mountain West meet and all-time mark.

San Diego’s Morganne McKennan was second in 1:00.87 while her teammate Klara Thormalm finished third in 1:00.93.

Colorado State’s Madison Ward (1:01.44), San Diego’s Caitlin Delany (1:01.51), Fresno’s Manuela Mendolicchio (1:02.02), Nevada’s Donna Depolo (1:02.06) and Boise State’s Laura Williams (1:02.07) rounded out the A-final

Women’s 100 Back

It was another close race in the evening’s last event. Wyoming’s Samantha Burke won gold in the 100 back in a time of 52.88, dropping nearly two seconds from her entry time.

Colorado State’s Tonicia Thomas swam to silver in 52.97 and San Jose’s Colleen Humel earned bronze in 53.29.

Wyoming’s Isobel Ryan (53.29), Boise State’s Allyson Kleinsorgen (53.47), Boise State’s Abbey Sorensen (53.59), Nevada’s Imogren Watson (54.27) and Colorado State’s Rowan Hauber (56.76) completed tonight’s fastest heat.
