St. Thomas Aquinas Wins Kansas 1A-5A Girls State Title By Four Points

At the 2018 Kansas Girls Swimming 1A-5A State Championships St. Thomas Aquinas beat Kapaun Mt. Carmel by a mere four points, with final scores of 289 and 285. A number of races were also decided by slim margins.

Molly JenkinsJesse PaxtonMaddie Kopp, and Aubrey Hesser won the 200 medley relay for St. Thomas Aquinas by nearly two full seconds in 1:52.42. Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s Elizabeth MitschNatalie KnappAmanda Le, and Lily Valentas were second in 1:45.27.

Kopp, Hesser, Paxton, and Allie Micklavzina also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.54. Paxton added an individual victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.62).

Knapp and Mitsch went one-two in the 200 IM in 2:15.11 and 2:15.81. Mitsch was also runner up in the 100 backstroke, touching in 59.55, just .01 behind Sarah Graven (59.54) of B V-Southwest.

Seabury Academy’s Ella Blake led three girls under 2:00 in the 200 free with her 1:56.38.

Sydney Schmidt, a junior from Bishop Carroll, won back to back events: the 50 free in 24.35 and the 100 fly in 57.62. Her sophomore teammate Lexie Shelton edged Blake 5:09.15 to 5:09.33 to win the 500 freestyle. Shelton was runner up in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.70).

Bishop Miege’s Cassie Grunhard swam a 54.66 to win the 100 freestyle.

Kapun Mt. Carmel finally got a relay victory in the 400 freestyle relay where the team of Katherine Baldessari, Knapp, Mitsch, and Claire Conover posted a 3:41.16.
