At Sunday’s 2018 New Jersey High School Meet of Champions seven meet records went down and some underclassmen boys closed in on some of the older state marks.

Girls

Darlene Fung of The Pingry School raced to a 22.80 in the 50 freestyle, a new meet record. In second was Ryann Styer of Ocean City (23.14), just .01 faster than Mount Saint Mary’s Shay Hollander (23.15). Fung also won the 100 freestyle with a 50.05, four tenths shy of Kelsi Worrell‘s meet record of 49.79. Immaculate Heart’s senior Kate Sheridan was runner up there in 50.83.

Ocean City’s Maggie Wallace posted a 1:48.75 to win the 200 freestyle by a second and a half before blasting a 4:46.27 meet record in the 500 freestyle. The Indiana commit‘s time was just faster than Amanda Nunan‘s record of 4:46.31 set in 2016.

An old record came down in the 100 backstroke. Hollander stopped the clock in 54.14, two tenths faster than the 2007 record, a 54.39 swum by Lauren English. Bishop Eustace’s Mackenzie O’Connor touched second (55.15).

While there was no record in the 100 breaststroke, there was a tie for first. Grace Yoon of Cherry Hill East and Nora Woods of Audubon Collingswood both got to the wall in a time of 1:02.73. Yoon won a gold that she did not need to share in the 200 IM. There the sophomore finished in 2:02.51, while runner up honors went to Katie McClintock of Mainland Regional in 2:02.99.

Haddon Heights’ Margot Kaczorowski raced to a 55.72 for 100 butterfly gold ahead of Haddon Township’s Christine Gallagher and her 56.39.

In the 200 freestyle relay the top two teams were under the old state record, a 1:35.31 from Hillsborough in 2013. Ultimately, Ocean City took home the new mark with a 1:34.61 to Immaculate Heart’s 1:35.00. Immaculate Heart got the better of Ocean City in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing in 3:28.78 to Ocean City’s 3:29.54. Immaculate Heart also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.82.

Boys

Delbarton freshman John Alexy won the 50 freestyle with a 20.58. With three years of high school swimming still to go, Alexy is only three tenths shy of the meet record, a 20.27 set way back in 1991 by Jason Rosenbaum. Mainland Regional’s Joey Rogers was runner up in 20.78, before winning the 100 free with a 45.37, four tenths faster than teammate and fellow senior Glenn Lasco in 45.71.

Three swimmers were under 1:40 in the 200 freestyle. Matt Lequang of Notre Dame High School led the way in 1:38.09, followed by Scotch Plains Fanwood’s Josh Cohen in 1:39.55 and Lasco in 1:39.97.

Destin Lasco of Mainland Regional was first to the wall in the 500 free. The sophomore finished in 4:24.90, in striking distance of the meet record, a 4:24.04 set in 1986 by Sean Killion. Lequang was second (4:27.51).

Alexy’s second gold was in the 100 backstroke where the Delbarton freshman clocked a 48.50. Egg Harbor Township’s Christian Bell was also under 50 in a 49.07.

Pingry School freshman Matt Fallon won the 100 breaststroke with a 56.13. His senior teammate Sean Tan topped the 100 butterfly in 49.72, just edging Bell (49.78).

Destin Lasco destroyed the field to set the state mark in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:44.59. Fallon was second (1:51.46).

Mainland Regional set the meet mark in the 200 freestyle relay, winning by three seconds with a 1:23.12. The team also won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:02.43. The Pingry School took the 200 medley relay title in a meet record time of 1:32.49.
