Sarah Kohler, Philip Heintz Close Out German Nationals With Victories

The final session of the 130th International German Championships had once again eight individual events to offer. In seven of them, the big favorites prevailed. The only exception: the women’s 50m freestyle. Angelina Köhler raced to the top. The 18-year-old Hannoverian set the best mark after 25.42 seconds and narrowly directed the Dutch Valerie van Roon (25.46) and Jessica Felsner (SC Aqua Cologne, 25.48) on the other medal ranks.

In quick 22.12 seconds, Damian Wierling (SG Essen) defended his title over 50m freestyle. It was his third individual title in this Championship. Silver went to the Egyptian Ali Khalafalla (22.41) ahead of Thom de Boer (22.60) from the Netherlands.

National title number two went to Alexandra Wenk (SG Stadtwerke München) in the 200 IM in 2:14.60 in the 200m IM. Next to her on the podium were Marie Pietruschka (SSG Leipzig, 2:15,03) and Franziska Weidner (SG Mittelfranken, 2:15.95).

As expected, Philip Heintz won gold among the men. In 2:00.88, he beat the Egyptian Mohamed Samy (2:01.05) who finished second. Third place went to Paul Hentschel (SC Chemnitz, 2:02.95).

Defending champion in the 200 back Lisa Graf, won gold from the pool of the SSE in 2:10.39 over 200m back, also lived up to her favorite role. Behind Neuköllner, Jenny Mensing (SC Wiesbaden, 2:11.33) and Sonnele Öztürk (Wasserfreunde Spandau 04, 2:12.62) took second and third place respectively.

The next title defense followed directly in the next race. Here there was no passing by Christian Diener for the competition. The Potsdam won 1:59.19 “controlled” and thanks to a final spurt ahead of Andreas Wiesner (SG Stadtwerke München, 1:59.77) and Ole Braunschweig (SG Neukölln, 2:00.47). It was the third title for servants in Berlin.

Over 1500m freestyle two European Championships medal contenders secured the title in a sovereign manner. Florian Wellbrock (SC Magdeburg, 15:08.45) won by a wide margin in the men ahead of Junior Champion Christian Keber (TV Wetzlar, 15:35.20) and Niklas Frach (SSG Saar Max Ritter, 15:57.08).

Sarah Köhler (SG Frankfurt, 16:06.82) scored with even greater advantage to gold. Silver including junior gold went to Josephine Tesch (Berliner TSC, 16:54.90), bronze to Celine Rieder (Neckarsulm Sport-Union, 17:09.58).

Well, i’m exited to see what Philip and Florian can do in Glasgow after a full taper. Especially looking forward to the dogfight between Florian Wellbrock and Gregorio Paltrinieri!
