Santa Margarita Girls Claim Dominant CIF SS D1 Victory; Northwood Boys Win

The girls from Santa Margarita cruised to their fifth straight CIF Southern Section Division 1 title on Saturday afternoon, scoring 527.5 points. Tesoro finished second with 222. The Northwood boys also walked away with a title after a successful afternoon where they scored 282 points to Loyola’s 238 points.

Girls

Santa Margarita was out ahead from the get-go. Ella Ristic, Isabelle Odgers, Mia Ristic, and Marriott Hoffmann combined for a winning 1:42.62 in the 200 medley relay.

Harvard bound Samantha Shelton of Santa Margarita led the way into the individual events, finishing in 1:44.05 in the 200 freestyle. Her teammates Ella Ristic (1:45.93) and Mackenzie Degn (1:48.49) were third and fourth. Newport Harbor’s Ayla Spitz placed second in 1:45.56.

Odgers (who will head to USC in the fall) cracked two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:59.99. Santa Margarita’s winning streak continued into the 50 freestyle where Anicka Delgado won in 22.71 and her teammate Hofmann was third (23.50). Tesoro’s Malia Mills earned silver (23.48). Delgado also won the very next event, the 100 fly, in 53.25, just ahead of Fountain Valley’s Hannah Farrow (53.80).

Ella Ristic cracked 50 (49.61) for 100 freestyle gold. Somebody other than Santa Margarita finally got a win in the 500 freestyle. Spitz got her hand to the wall first in 4:45.91 ahead of Mater Dei’s Stephanie Su in 4:49.42.

Delgado, Hoffmann, Degn, and Shelton put Santa Margarita back on top in the 200 freestyle relay, touching in 1:31.47 and setting a new Division 1 meet record.

Ventura sophomore Tea Laughlin blasted a 52.77 to win the 100 backstroke by over two seconds. Odgers posted a 1:01.90 to win the 100 breaststroke. Delgado, Degn, Ella Ristic, and Shelton finished the 400 freestyle relay in first, touching in 3:18.63, just shy of their own Division record set last year.

Boys

Northwood’s Gabe Munoz, Henry Wu, HwaMin Sim, and Collin Press won the 200 medley relay in 1:31.69, a half second ahead of Tesoro in second place. Northwood carried the winning ways into the individual events where senior Shawn Lou won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.24, with Crespi sophomore Zach Van Zandt (1:37.80) on his tail. Van Zandt came down in distance to win the 100 freestyle with a 44.92.

Van Zandt’s tammate Hayden Liu topped the 200 IM in 1:48.51. Also joining him under 1:50 were Tesoro’s Jonathan Cheng (1:49.75) and Northwood’s Munoz (1:49.86).

The top six in the 50 freestyle were all under 21.00 (and two tied for seventh in 21.00). Leading the way was Aliso Niguel’s Sean Slusiewicz in 20.44, just a tenth faster than Brandon Toland (20.54) of Los Alamitos.

Connor Lee of Loyola won the 100 butterfly with a 47.82. His teammate Mark McCray won the 100 backstroke (48.94) ahead of Liu (49.42).

Tesoro senior Michael Brinegar won the 500 freestyle in 4:21.29 while Dana Hills’ Owen Kao (4:28.66) also cleared 4:30 for second place.

Van Zandt, Liu, Jack Chen, and Sergey Ternov combined to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:22.99) for Crespi.

Northwood’s Wu clocked a 55.00 for the 100 breaststroke title. Corona del Mar senior Ryan Schildwachter finished second in 55.58.

Northwood ended the night on top of the podium again with Lou, Wu, Munoz, and Hunter Hitchens touching in 3:02.24 in the 400 freestyle relay.

And a huge percentage of the SS swimmers going to state are NOVA, as well! My daughter just transferred to NOVA last fall and her HS is one of the few represented that are not located in Irvine. She is over the moon excited!
