The third day of action at the men’s ACC championships in Atlanta featured a new conference record as Duke’s Peter Kropp edged out Virginia Tech’s Brandon Fiala for the top seed in the men’s 100 breast.

Meanwhile, the NC State Wolfpack, currently sporting a 471-402.5 lead over Louisville, placed 11 swimmers into championship finals, but the Cardinals will not go away after putting nine up.

One day after qualifying first for the final of the 500 free and then finishing a close second in the final, UNC’s Henry Campbell posted the top time into the final of the 400 IM with a 3:42.25, moving him into the top ten in the NCAA this season. One of the breakout stories of the meet so far, Campbell finished almost a second ahead of the defending champion in the event, Virginia Tech’s Robert Owen, who qualified second in 3:43.22.

Louisville freshman Etay Gurevich was third in 3:43.93, and just behind him was UNC’s Michael Meyer (3:43.93). NC State’s Anton Ipsen, who edged out Campbell to win the 500 free, qualified fifth in 3:44.97.

Keegan Foulke, another Louisville freshman, picked up the sixth seed for the final with his time of 3:46.54, and he was followed by NC State’s Adam Linker (3:46.55) and Virginia Tech’s Zach Switzer (3:47.03).

One night after setting a new conference record to win the 50 free, NC State’s Ryan Held topped prelims of the 100 fly with his time of 45.81. But after demolishing the field in the 50 by seven tenths of a second, he figures to have some much tougher competition in the butterfly race.

Louisville’s Josh Quallen qualified second in 45.81, and just behind him was NC State’s Andreas Vazaios, who posted a time of 45.99 after posting a new conference record in the 200 IM a night earlier.

Notre Dame’s Justin Plaschka, the runner-up in the 50 free, qualified fourth in 46.05, and also making the final were Louisville’s Zach Harting (46.42), Virginia’s Bryce Keblish (46.58), Louisville’s David Boland (46.62) and NC State’s Coleman Stewart (46.80).

Duke’s Peter Kropp and Virginia Tech’s Brandon Fiala will go head-to-head in the 100 breast final after both went under the existing ACC record in prelims. Kropp finished in 51.46, and Fiala touched in 51.50. That erased the previous conference mark of 51.83 set by Thomas Dahlia in 2015 and the ACC meet record of 51.86 Fiala set on his way to a conference title last season.

The times also rank fourth and tied for fifth in the country this year, respectively.

Both Kropp and Fiala are seniors, and a third senior, Notre Dame’s Trent Jackson, picked up the third qualifying spot in 52.44. Louisville’s Carlos Claverie qualified fourth in 52.47 and will be lurking from lane six.

The Blue Devils put up a second swimmer in the A-final as Dylan Payne touched in 52.69, just ahead of UNC’s Craig Emslie (52.73), NC State’s Derek Hren (52.77) and Georgia Tech’s Moises Loschi (52.96).
