NEW COMMIT: North Carolina State University has recently received a verbal commitment from backstroker Owen Hanna. A native of Newbury, Ohio, Hanna will join the Wolfpack as part of the class of 2023.

A rising senior at University High School, Hanna has competed in the 100 back A-Final at the Ohio Division 2 State Championships every season during his high school career thus far. During his junior campaign, the NISCA All-American finished fourth in the 100 back (49.94) and was a member of the winning 4×50 medley relay team.

Hanna also swims year-round with Solon Stars Swim Club where he is a Junior National qualifier in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. At the Lake Erie Senior Championships this past March, he won the 200 back (1:47.92) and took second in the 100 back (50.50). At the Speedo Junior National Championships earlier this month, he posted a personal-best 59.02 in the 100m back.

He told Swimming World:

“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at North Carolina State University. Coach Holloway and his team emphasize a unique team culture, which makes NCSU swimming a perfect fit for me. Additionally, the outstanding academic opportunities at NCSU will undoubtedly prepare me for the future. I would like to thank coach Holloway and his staff for this opportunity as well as my USA and high school coaches for helping me reach my goals. Go Pack!”

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 23.47
  • 100 back – 49.94
  • 200 back – 1:47.92
  • 200 free – 1:42.81

Hanna is a solid pickup for the Wolfpack and will join a talented backstroke group. When he arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season, he will have one season to train with Coleman Stewart, the ACC and NCAA champion in the 100 back. NC State is coming off another very successful season in which they won their fourth-consecutive ACC title and placed fourth at NCAAs for the third-straight year.
