Meaghan Raab Among Winners at Day 4 of 2017 U.S. Open Championships

Finals of day four was full of close matches as multiple athletes dueled for gold at the 2017 U.S. Open Championships. One close victory was Meaghan Raab’s win over Gabby Deloof in the 200 free, while Elise Haan out-touched Kennedy Stuart in the women’s 100 back.

Women’s 200 Free

The race for victory in the women’s 200 free was between Meaghan Raab of Nashville Aquatics and Gabby Deloof, swimming unattached. At the touch, it was Raab claiming the win with a 1:58.71 over Deloof’s 1:58.92.

Texas A&M’s Claire Rasmus picked up third overall with a time of 2:00.49, while teammate Katie Portz was fourth with a 2:00.51.

Pleasanton Seahawks’ Miranda Heckman earned fifth with a time of 2:00.73, followed by Wisconsin Aquatics’ Abby Jagdfeld’s 2:01.05.

Kentucky Aquatics’ Geena Frerike and Catie Deloof, swimming unattached, completed the top eight with times of 2:01.17 and 2:01.47.

Men’s 200 Free

Close racing continued into the men’s 200 free as Jeff Newkirk of Quest Swimming and Long Gutierrez of Cal Aquatics held a tight race for first. Newkirk edged Gutierrez for the victory with a time of 1:48.17 over Gutierrez’s 1:48.58.

Matt Hutchins of Wisconsin Aquatics turned in a 1:49.68 for third overall, followed closely by Liam Egan, swimming unattached, and his time of 1:49.71.

Kentucky Aquatics’ Isaac Jones was fifth with a time of 1:49.74, just ahead of France’s Jonathan Atau’s 1:49.94.

Walker Higgins of Tennessee Aquatics and Mitch D’Arigo of Gator Swim Club finished seventh and eighth with times of 1:50.37 and 1:50.67.

Women’s 100 Breast

Great Britain’s Chloe Tutton fended off Cardinal Aquatics’ Andrea Cottrell for victory in the women’s 100 breast. Cottrell led throughout the first 50 out-splitting Tutton 32.52 to 32.73, however Tutton powered ahead in the final 50 splitting a 35.50 over Cottrell’s 35.88. Sutton touched first with a 1:08.23 over Cottrell’s 1:08.40.

Jorie Caneta of Texas A&M finished third in finals with a time of 1:08.66, followed by close finishes between Fort Collins’ Zoe Bartel and Long Island’s Margaret Aroesty. The two posted times of 1:08.95 and 1:08.96 for fourth and fifth respectively.

Mizzou’s Katharine Ross (1:09.04), Buenaventura’s Alicia Harrison (1:09.44), and Nashville’s Allie Raab (1:09.71) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 100 Breast

Ian Finnerty of Indiana University powered to first in the men’s 100 breast, flirting with a sub-minute swim. Finery stopped the clock at a time of 1:00.09 for gold.

Australia’s Tommy Sucipto took second overall with a time of 1:00.67, followed closely by Race Pace Club’s Michael Andrew and his time of 1:00.81.

George Harley of Australia finished fourth overall with a time of 1:00.96, while Coral Springs’ Alex Evdokimov was fifth with a time of 1:01.29.

Sho Shimazaki (1:01.55), Texas A&M’s Jonathan Tybur (1:01.63), and Avon Community’s Chandler Bray (1:01.90) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 100 Back

Elise Haan of Wolfpack Elite grabbed a narrow victory over Athens Bulldog’s Kylie Stewart in finals of the women’s 100 back. Hasan stopped the clock a slim .01 seconds ahead of the competition to take first with a 1:00.59 over Stewart’s 1:00.60.

Texas A&M’s Lisa Bratton finished third overall with a close time of 1:00.63, followed by Carmel Swim Club’s Claire Adams and her time of 1:00.99.

Bridgette Alexander of Kentucky was fifth in finals with a time of 1:01.05, just ahead of Scarlet Aquatics’ Matea Samardzic’s 1:01.34.

Lakeside Swim Team’s Asia Seidt and Wasatch Front Fish Market’s Ryan White turned in times of 1:01.77 and 1:01.78 for seventh and eighth respectively.

Men’s 100 Back

Arkady Vyatchanin, representing New York Athletic Club, was the only swimmer to dip below the 54-second mark in the men’s 100 back. Vyatchanin finished first with a time of 53.91.

Alabama’s Christopher Reid took second in finals with a time of 54.54, followed by Swim Wales’ Xavier Mohammed’s time of 54.62.

Brock Bonetti of Texas A&M was fourth overall with a time of 54.99, while Trojan Swim Club’s Ryan Lochte touched fifth with a 55.16.

Cal’s Matthew Josa (55.38), Wolfpack Elite’s Hennessey Stuart (55.38), and Quest Swimming’s Clark Beach (55.48) completed the top eight.
