In this episode of the Morning Swim Show, Frank Busch, National Team Director for USA Swimming, talks the FINA world championships and its subpar showing. Busch remained optimistic about the future, particularly the outlook for next year’s Olympic Games.

In an exclusive interview with Swimming World’s Jeff Commings at the world championships, Busch was quick to highlight the positive aspects of the team performance, including the ability to overcome various setbacks they endured throughout the past year.

“I’m very happy with the performances,” Bush said.

Busch also spoke about picking the world championship team a year early, saying it’s a part of the plan for the Olympic cycle that allows “athletes a chance all the way through” for a year.

“When you pick a team a year out, it can put all sorts of obstacles in the way,” Busch said. “There’s always going to be some challenges. The flip side of that is if you look at the number of first-timers and how they’re performing here, that’s what kind of laying down the gauntlet right now.”

Looking ahead to next year’s Olympic Trials and Olympic Games, Busch said the Americans are bound to continue their legacy of success.

“I’m not really worried about where we are and what we’re doing,” he said.
